Long time ago, a biology teacher brought in hatching eggs at various stages for the class to open and examine. I didn't want to do it. (Wimpy even back then!) There were beautiful glossy pictures in a book that I could look at and learn just as much and thought the whole exercise was a waste. Professor and I compromised by giving me the 1 day old egg to open. The worst part was one girl in the class who was very excited by the whole thing. She had one of the later eggs and when she opened it I could hear her exclaiming about it moving and kicking it's legs out of the hole (which I saw), getting yolk all over, and then eventually she said it was slowing down and then died. I had left the classroom.
Growing up with animals, each birth was precious, a little miracle of life, and not something to be wasted. I appreciate the importance of learning and expanding our knowledge, even if some creatures are sacrificed. The saddest thing to me about the whole bio class lesson was that there was not an example of a chick that made it to term, and was vigorous and healthy and alive. So these students, most of whom had never even seen a chicken up close in their lives, let alone a hatching chick, missed the miracle part.
I think the fact that you are excited by the amazing development of your chicks is wonderful! I bet you really could hear the heartbeat with a stethoscope. Now that would be a really neat experiment!

When I was in the 8th grade we were dissecting a piglet. It was a Friday, so we were given our baby, and told to talk about who was doing what. I had all boys in my group. They sat and talked while I swaddled the piglet. I got into their conversation, and didn't remember I was cradling a dead animal. When the teacher said to put our piglets back into the formaldehyde bucket, I was the last. I cried in the bathroom. I stayed at home for two days the next week, and did a report from an encyclopedia.
I think I have mentioned this before... but... my first dissection was in the 6th grade. a clam. then we did a squid. very cool, as a squid has a piece of cartilage called a "pen" and when removed, could be used to poke the ink sack and write with... but that was private school. I switched to public in the 7th grade, so no dissections til the 8th, which was a frog. in 9th we did the fetal pig. I felt bad, because I was both fascinated and disgusted at the same time. I got hardened by good teachers. by the time I finished college with my BS in Bio and Human Anatomy and Health Ed, I had done countless rabbits, cats, monkeys, and 2 humans. it's hard tho'... some animals are bred to be dissected. that is their only purpose.
the boys are doing fine in their new self arranged living quarters. I attempted putting Royce in with them, with the thought of opening the entire kennel to 10x20 if they can get along... nope. Archie and Royce went at each other hard... so, Royce has a 10x10 to himself and the others are happy together. I removed the dividing tarps.
so far today, I have 4 eggs. One RIR, one from Peach, one tiny egg from Ms. White who is now named Olive, and another tiny pullet egg that is bright blue-green with speckles. when I am sure I have all the eggs for the day, I will take pics.
I got some good pics (at least I hope they are good...) today, still in the camera, I'm kinda glued to CNN with the Boston manhunt, so I will multitask and get it done asap. I've been chicken obsessed for really an entire year, hardly any pics of anything but... so much so, that my Aunt Embeth has commented on a pic I posted of a plate I made in Brownies in May 1973 (40th anniversary coming up and it's still in service!) "Wow! and not a chicken in sight!" kinda made me take a look... thousands of pics of scenery and seasons over all the years, and then wham! nothing but chickens... so I posted "my day" on fb, and at the very end, I posted a pic of Peach's baby, just for good measure y'know... and said that "it's not a chicken (yet) that'll give a good ole
to Aunt Embeth...! and a few of my friends were quick to respond that they really enjoy all of my pics ~ especially the chicken pics! so that's another
to Aunt Embeth... actually, she's an artist and she loves the close up pics I take of their feathers... calls it "nature's art"
OK ~ have Roger and Ms. Broody taken you hostage? are they making you sit on those eggs at this point? I can picture Roger forcing you into a tub of honey, and then to roll in the seed bag... sit on the eggs, and become the incubating flock block...

did I tell you guys that my Mom has started a photo project? she has this one odd wall... that seems suited for a bunch of small pictures rather than one large piece of art... so she's gotten my Dad to print the pictures of my chickens and eggs, and she's framing them for that spot! I think that is so nice... and really hope that Aunt Embeth goes to visit SOON!

Christine and her boyfriend, Robby, are a lovely couple who live in Gilboa. they happen to be developmentally disabled, but they live independently and they sell worms every Spring. I bought lots last year, to encourage their enterprise, most of their worms went into my compost pile instead of the chickens... and after reading how they can be loaded with parasites... I'm glad they are working the compost... anyway, I stopped by after work, and they had a can full of worms and a kitchen sized garbage bag full of dried leaves and stuff for their nests...

how sweet is that?? and they tried to tell me that I didn't have to pay for the worms! nonsense!

Today I have done a load of laundry (after the guy came to fix the washer... Which he didn't fix. He will see if he can find a part.),
fed and watered all the coops, brooders, and tank. Okay, the fish were fed, but I have to add water.
Washed and put away ten dozen eggs
Got rid of three dozen eggs
Re-arranged the fridge
Cleaned off a few tables
Thought about doing dishes a few times
Thought about vacuuming a few times
Made more FF for the chicks and layers
Put stuff (neatly!!) in the shed
Put FF outside
Swept the porch a few times
made a list to tell me to wash the stupid dishes, and vacuum
Fed the chickens again, and made sure all was well.
Got the mail
Got ticked the dish fairy hasn't been here yet.
Thought about the stuff I need to do to the big coop
Wondered about cleaning the 6 -week-olds' pen
Didn't clean the pen
