Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Lynder...that's so funny and I can relate... upstate NY is different from downstate. downstate they call me Ay-unn. upstate, my name is Ee-unn. there's a carrier named Ian... and he and I have to laugh when we work in the same office cuz the PM or anyone... will say "hey Ee-unn..." and we have no idea which one of us they are talking to... funny thing is, if I tell you my name, I say Ann, like "an" apple... but it never clicks... but I have to share this randomly posted thingy on my fb page... timing eh?

posted like 8 minutes ago... I can add a good 30 more names to that list but some are technically not on Long Island, some are tho'...
Wait.... aren't you going to give us the pronunciation key?! The only one I've ever even heard is Massapequa (Meg Ryan's character was from there in Kate and Leopold).

Muahahahaha I got it to work.. and even found some older pics!
Guinea egg top right, pointy lil thing!

BCM hatching last week!
Bunny girl! I was holding the mealie cup

My DH cuddling Paddy!

Yay! You got pics!

That's quite a selection you are hatching! I would have expected guinea eggs to be larger. How many BCMs did you have hatch? That looked like a good dark egg.
Very pretty chickens, and I especially like Bunny. (Was going to name one of my girls Bunny, but I got vetoed.

Paddy must be really big by now. Does he still get to some in and nap with dad?

My birds are 21 weeks old and still no egss...today I bought some KFC and decided to eat it by the copp. My barred rocks were very interested in my food. We had a long talk about pulling your own weight around the home. I hope my pep talk turns into eggs soon.

Haha! Excellent technique! You will fit in nicely around here.

I understand what the main problem is, though. You have barred rocks! They are incorrigible and so busy butting into everyone's business they don't give egg laying priority. Hopefully you have a few other breeds and have a chance of eggs soon. It's the last couple of weeks to wait that are the hardest!

and glad u joined us! Hehe, they love KFC, don't eat a taco around them, my rooster jumped and stole mine in mid bite! Grr and it had fire sauce on it too!

Quote: Bunny hops, then runs like a rabbit. She was the one I had gave up on, every one of her eggs hatch now! She really surprised me.
Wound up with 8, 1 is a "mystery chick" I bought 10, he shipped 13 eggs! The mystery is the golden cuckoo maran.
Thank you! Oh my, he is big as WeeWee!

Yep paddy is the special one. DH still cuddles him! He is spoiled rotten and HUGE. DH fights with Big Gee daily, and reminds him his son may replace him if he don't stop biting everyone

Paddy goes out this week

Scary stuff. But he is heavily feathered and the porch is too warm since spring is finally here. He is just as fiesty as his daddy, but I am so worried about him. WeeWee thinks he is her baby so she will not let the others harass him.

Quote: okay... lol ... Wantagh = wan-TAW. Shinnecock = SHINehCOCK. Quoque = CWog. Hauppauge = hopPOG. Islip = ice-lip... Massapequa for those who missed the film... = MASSApeakwa.
Aquebogue - AKA BOG. Syosset = SIGHahSET. Patchogue = patchOG. then we have Copaigue, Ronkoncoma, Yaphank, Mattituck (easy...) Mamaroneck...... the list goes on and on... it struck me as funny for the first time when I brought a Massachusetts resident down for a visit... she wanted to know what MAMA ro NECK was like... it's maMARoNECK...I was already in my 20's...didn't occur to me that they were odd names...

JCH, your birds and eggs are beautiful! so glad you got some pics!!! they best get you that camera for Mother's Day!!! if they don't, I'll send you one of mine! I have an extra digital camera, nice little unit...
Paddy is so adorable, can't wait to see a recent pic of him, he must be big, but I love the pic of DH with him and the rubber ducky... precious!

Hi Gatorbait! hang in there, you are soooo close, could be any day between now and say... 26 weeks of age... my BR's were about 27-28 weeks old before they started to lay, but once they started... they (or at least one of them...) is quite a good producer, 5-6 eggs a week (Betty). the other (Wilma) even at 1 year old, still lays a pee wee egg, about 4 a week max. but she has placed herself at the top of the pecking order, so her excuse for not laying is she has to spend too much time bossing everyone else around....

Great news about your hubs!  We were considering the looooong distance commute and weekend dad thing, which sucks!  Luckily my hubs found a good position near home, with only occasional travel.

I looked at your pics and to me you have what looks like an Ancona girl. Looks the same as my neighbor's 2, which are egg laying machines. Maybe Mary's sorting out her springtime hormones, or maybe she's just really good at hiding them. How old?  My very dominant Leghorn quit laying for about 2 weeks while deciding whether or not she wanted a gender change. Fortunately she chose to be a hen,is back laying regularly, and has stopped mounting the other hens. Have a few head feathers to regrow! :/

Also, what is the pretty splash (?) in your avatar?  Is that Tommy Sophia the white layer? Love the blue legs!

I wouldn't mind a bit of your rain. We are supposed to be in the upper 80s all week. Too hot for me and not yet May!!

Mary is supposed to be an Ancona, I don't know what the deal is with her not laying. She is 28 weeks. The avatar is a splash Andalusian, and my son calls her Sophia and my brother in law calls her tommy. Now we call her tommy Sophia lol. She's a piece of work ...she is the smallest girl yet has big attitude. The only one I've chased through the snow and she hides her eggs I'm pretty sure. She won't lay if I am watching she comes out of the box and clucks her little head off. She doesn't even sound like the other girls....it's like constant chatter . She paces and is super hyper. More flighty and high strung in general. I took that picture the only time I've ver been able to calmly catch her and hold her. She's quick.

Sally, thats awesome good news on DH's job. I hated when mine was over the road, really hard on him too.
:yesss: OOOOOOOH, first guinea egg today! Super excited!:celebrate going to get someone to take pics!!!!
he has always had a huge commute for work, but for the past four years he has mostly worked out of town. Anywhere from 2-16hrs drive from home and it has sucked. You go where the work is right? I actually debated moving because of the lack of work for him, but if it wasn't for my family and New York it would have been harder. He had permanent work in Chicago, but now this economy sucks. I feel so light today, the new job offers better healthcare cheaper plus he will be home . We have been paying ridiculous amounts for healthcare. In the next three months I will save so much. MORE chickens!!! Lol
