Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

"I know him well. So you better listen to me."
Excellent pictures! I really love this one. Chick is leaning against mama Roger. Here's hoping you wake up to a few more little fuzzies.

PS. The little lanais you added to the boxes are working perfectly. Giving those eggs every possible chance.

Awwww! So cute!!! I just read up on all the hatching! I have eggs that should have hatched yesterday...still no sign that they are going to hatch. Makes me sad

I understand that. Did you know you can do a float test for hatching eggs? That test starts with 100* water. Wait for it to settle, put the egg(s) in, and wait for it to settle again.
Sinker and floater is not what it is for table eggs. Unfortunately, I cannot remember the sink/float/half way meanings.

Many Folks Are Having Eggs Go Overdue For Hatch And Wondering If They Are Duds, Late, Or Have Had Some Sort Of Fetal Demise.... The Float Test Is Simple Yet Effect Way Of Checking Egg Viability.

I Normally Give Eggs A Full 24 Hrs Overdue Before Float Testing. It Works On All Bird Eggs- Period! Takes Very Little Equipment Or Time To Do And Is Easy To Perform.

Start With A Bowl Of Sufficient Depth To Allow The Eggs Your Testing To Float Freely Or Sink. Add 100 Degree Water To The Needed Level And Allow It To Settle( Quit Swirling And Calm Down)

Once Settled Take The Egg Or Eggs To Be Tested And Gently Lower Them Into The Water With As Little Disturbance As Possible. You May Need To Wait A Few Minutes For The Water To Settle Again After Adding Egg/ Eggs. Then Just Watch....

Eggs Are Judged By Observation With Results As Follows:

1. Sinker= Dud, Never Developed

2. High Floater (like A Fishing Bobber Without Weights) Say 45% Or More Of The Egg Above The Water Line= Dud, No Development Or Fetal Demise, Likely Rupture Of Internal Membranes Causing The Egg To Dehydrate.

3. Low Floater= Viable Egg, Development Full Term

4. Low Floater Rockin And Rollin! This Is The Live Embryo Moving Inside The Egg= Definate Viable Egg!

Once Test Results Complete Take Viable Eggs And Gently Pat Dry And Replace In Hatcher. Duds Are Best Discarded At This Time.

It Should Be Noted All Eggs Warrant Close Inspection Prior To Float Testing--- Any Pips In The Shell? Do Not Float Test! If The Shell Is Broken, Pipped Or Cracked In Any Way Water May Enter And Drown The Chick Inside

This Test Works Off Of Air Cell Development With Embryo Growth. Infertile Eggs Will Have An Underdeveloped Or Absent Air Cell That Isnt Large Enough To Float The Egg....thus The Sinkers. Ruptured Membranes Will Allow The Egg To Dehydrate.... Thus The High Floater. Proper Development Of The Embryo Will Cause The Air Cell To Develope To The Point Where Viable Eggs Will Float With Approximately 10-15% Of The Egg Above The Water Line--- These Are The Viable Eggs. Obvious Movement Of The Egg Shows Signs Of Life For The Chick Within. Works On All Bird Eggs From Hummingbirds To Ostriches

Thank you, I will try that when I get home. Frustrated with my luck hatching. Out of 40+ eggs I have set at different times, I have hatched eight so far. Most have been shipped eggs but still.

sad sad day today. bad accident, my friends Dad was killed. don't know if the other person had fallen asleep at the wheel or was texting... but she hit him head on... the way the scene looks, he knew what was coming. he was way off the road, and she hit him anyway. car caught fire. I can't stand it. he was a great great man. a great believer in humanity, in second chances... he was a Judge, one you wouldn't want to go before a second time... if you know what I mean... his disappointment in being let down was often enough to crush the hardest punk. He was a Mountaintop Icon, always helping, always thinking of others... RIP Donald Olson <3

on a happier note... I spent about an hour with the chickens when I finally got home. 13 eggs, 1 being a soft shell eaten over the other eggs... so I have 12 kinda yolky eggs....2 more days of double routes and I get a day off! I so need it now...

The final chick count will be four. Roger hatched one RIR and the remaining two eggs were undeveloped and rotten. Big BO broody hatched three chicks. One Delaware and two RIR. The remaining eggs were interesting. To help educate myself I cracked open all remaining eggs to see how or if they developed. I was interested in seeing how much each had developed and at what stage each chick died. Big broodys was most interesting. One egg was rotten with no sign of development. Another had developed into a mass that resembled a chick but was still not very well developed. Another was pretty well developed but never started or lived to start breaking away the shell. No holes or crack in the shell just a dead chick. The remaining egg is the one I reported last night that was hatching. It was alive last night but never made it out of the shell alive. About half of the shell was gone but it just couldn't finish the job. Both broodys and their chicks have been moved to boxes on the floor which they accepted and they moved the chicks into the new boxes. No problems yet with the broodys getting along and both seem to respect each others chick/chicks. This has been a awesome learning experience and will continue to be in the days ahead. Thanks to all of my great friends here for all of the help. I didn't have time to take pictures when I got home but will for sure in the days ahead. I am pretty happy with this first attempt. I would do so many things different before attempting this again. The different stages of development tell me that really no major mistake was made by be me or the broodys. We just lost a few along the way for different reasons. My first thought was the two freezing mornings we had about a week ago. And really its a miracle any of the eggs could survive five of six hens a day rolling them around and laying eggs on top of them. That won't happen again. Broodys will be separated next time. So stage two begins. Raising the chicks. I will continue to keep the broodys in and the rest of the flock outside in the run during the day. I let them in after 8:00 pm so they can roost in the coop. Lock them out in the morning again. This is working fine for now. Next time I will be prepared. FOUR

Four little bundles of joy! I think the eggs can take a bit of cold and jostling around as the hen rotates them pretty aggressively. But what they can't handle well is being shipped. The undeveloped ones might noy have been fertile to begin with. Glad they didn't 'splode!

Now just hoping that you don't have 4 roosters.

So sorry to hear this. Makes it worse when you know it was probably avoidable.
