Congratulations to everybody on the new chicks and new egg layers. Have not read all of the comments but hope everybody is doing OK. Looks like lots of chicks this spring for everybody so now we begin the "Wait it out" for first eggs. Quick update here. Roger gave Little Roger up for adoption. Big broody jumped at the chance to take Little Roger in. Big broody keeps all four chicks now safely on the floor away from the bigger birds. She is a great mom and now there is hope for Little Roger. It is kinda sad to see Little Roger call for its mom and run to her only to be ignored. On the other hand Little Roger seems happier playing and hanging out with the other chicks. Does Roger know this or is she just a self centered b.... bad mom? The broody coop addition is on hold a while. Work got me really busy. Three sides are on. Roof is done. Need to install some windows/ ventilation so it doesn't get too hot in there. Hope to finish it this weekend but work will decide if that is possible. Then a run will have to be built so it will be a while longer before it can house chickens. It will be nice when done and will have so many options (like getting a "few" more birds) but mainly I will be able to put the broody in there with chicks and they can raise their chicks without all of the harassment from the other birds. When its not used by the broody I can open all the doors and it will be one big "chicken compound" Two coops and two runs that they can roam freely thru any section of it. Should relieve a lot of stress.
Chicks are just past four weeks and growing fast. Both broodies are laying again. Chicks can get up on the big roost but not big enough to fight off the meanies when its time to roost. Big Broody will take them up there to roost when its time. For now they all sleep in the corner with Big Broody. I'm sure Little Roger does not miss that experience every night fighting for position on the roost. That's all I know right now and will keep you posted when I can.
When I checked on the nest about four hours ago, there was still just one chick. And five unhatched eggs. She should have had three unhatched.
Anyone else see a problem?
So yesterday I was checking on Baby, and there was another hen in there. Not 100% sure how she got in there, but flying over the rafter is a possibility. No one has ever done it in over a year, but it is possible. Anyway, I can only guess it was her that laid 2 eggs in there. I have decided that when Baby gets out of the nest in a few days, I will give the 2 extras to Beth. They will be (I guess) about five days behind the others in her clutch. The way I figure it, she stays on the nest an extra 3 days with the babies anyway. Maybe they will hatch early, or with the way the coop is designed, she may stay on them enough to hatch them. If nothing else, I will turn on the incubator for a few days. I just don't want to waste the power for 2 eggs.
Night all. And you should feel special. No one else knows a chick hatched. I am too busy to go to the other threads.
MC glad you got a chick and thanks for sharing with us. Cheeka I hope you come home to happy chickens. AL did you draw out the plans for the tractor or are you doing it as you go?
We are off to Indiana this evening and will be back Monday Night (sad). I am glad to go to the wedding but am afraid to go and leave the chickens especially with the latest bad behavior. Oh yesterday we got five eggs. Lucy likes to try and eat my daughters toes/clothes. Silly chicken.
Going to check on eggs, was nothing at either check this morning.
I hope I got it so the other hen can't get into the broody room. While I was exchanging the big waterer for the chick waterer, I chased the Buff out, and heard peeping. A little red sex linked color chick was peeping at me. I held her for a moment.
So sweet. IDK how many are out. I didn't want to bother the momma.
we had a great time. I asked Mylee and her cousin Isabelle to dance for the chickens... to encourage egg laying while we're away... they did very very well!
I came home to 29 Eggs!
A light yellow peep was in there tonight ... Along with yet another egg. I am so ticked that she keeps getting in there. Also, there were only 3 other eggs from that coop today. 6 eggs total laid today out of ?? Whoever wants to lay! 16 hens, 2 actively broody, one still with an aching foot (she is active now. Maybe walking will get it back in shape). and one that may be broken of broody.
I swear I looked everywhere. With such low numbers, I am wondering if there was an issue today? No signs of yolk on eggs, so soft shell and eating sounds wrong.
Well, anyway. Cute pics, Cheeka. Congrats on your egg numbers.
Will HOPEFULLY get to go back to reading threads tomorrow. 4 days off = A lot to read!
Mama broody was up on the roost tonight and all the babies were on the floor. This was her first night not sleeping with them. One of them tried really hard to get up to the big roost but just couldn't make it (I think it was getting too dark to see well). All of them ignored the fact that there is a shorter roost in there. Mama watched, but I didn't see her go down to them. I think she's starting to let them go on their own, though I notice that she keeps an eye on them from a distance. She does come out/over if there seems to be real trouble brewing. Only one or two of them really really listen to her and both are pullets I think so, that's good. She still makes the cluck cluck noise for them to eat, but she's not going crazy over them any more. I do notice that if they don't follow her out to free range, she will eventually come back and hang out with them. I'm pretty pleased with how she's done things. Most all of them got into the coop on their own tonight, that's a first.
(potentially) Chicken Helper finally knocked off her nonsense and started laying two days ago.
Glad to see all the new babies and how the other babies are doing!
Apparently, Francisco doesn't recognize me all dressed up...he was really trying to check me out when we got home from daughter's oorientation....silly bird, go back to stalking your girls!
