Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

ahhhh... it's so horribly quiet with just the sounds of the roosters crowing... and no Mylee imitating them and running around... they departed this afternoon, and will get in to Albuquerque at almost midnight NY time.

OMG, the phone just rang. they are still at the airport and they can't leave until Tuesday!!! you know.. I was praying for cancellations all the way to the airport... and then I felt so guilty for being selfish... then when we got there, the first flight WAS cancelled, but they got transferred to another flight that was only a few minutes later... I'm on my way back to the airport RIGHT NOW!!!

Poor Mylee, long day... 5 hours at the airport... and she can't go back home... she was pretty good for a couple of hours but then she had enough. overtired and super grouchy...

17 eggs today, and 2 dozen packed and ready for tomorrow. it was fun this morning, Olive was all puffed up standing in the nest area when I went out first thing ~ so I stuck my hand out and she laid a perfect egg right in my palm. about an hour later, I got Peach to do the same thing.

I let the boys out for a few hours when I got back from the first airport run, then it started to pour, so I went to round them up, Royce and Carl had already gone back in, which made it easy and then I came in to say hi over here and that is when I had to make trip #2. at least they were already put away... they can't go back out again til Tuesday afternoon...

RR, hang in there, it will happen anytime! my first gang didn't lay til between 26-28 weeks... the December chicks were early layers, all starting between 17-19 weeks... I was not expecting eggs from them at all, and I was confused at first when I started finding more than 1 blue egg per day... back then, only Isis laid blue eggs...

Look! A pretty blue speckled egg :)

From this pretty girl

Which makes total sense, since she is an amercauna roo over a GLW hen :)

Found a broody. Cochin bantam known for being very broody, and started going broody a few days ago. Picking her her up this week.

What do I need to know??

What are the odds of transporting her breaking the broodyness? Should I buy eggs and take them to her, then pick up everyone in a month? If it does break her broodyness, how long before she feels broody again?

SBMom, nice find! Peachy is a bantasm cochin x EE, pretty much the only noticeable EE feature is her perfect little blue-green egg, although she has a lovely beard and muffs... which may not be cochin related... i've never done any research on cochins. your new broody will make the trip just fine, it may take her a couple of days to settle in, it will depend on her surroundings as to how quickly she'll start to sit. the instant I gave Peach my old dog kennel cab, she was set. but she didn't have to protect her spot from other hens... at this point she knows it is hers, and so does everyone else... I tried to give Violet a quiet place alone, but as a dominant hen, she has control over the front corner of the apple coop... I'll wait til her eggs are done before I move them. they are due to start hatching a week from Wednesday. I can block off the hen entryway the day before, give Violet her own chick friendly food and water right in there ... then after she's finished, I can move them to the newest pen... the apple coop is prime laying territory, I can't let her have it all to herself for more than 3 days. they'll revolt, probably unionize...

my experience is limited to Peach, but she is from private stock, not a hatchery bird. she turned broody at about 8 months, maybe 4-6 weeks after she initially started laying! she seems to follow the same pattern. she lays about 9-10 eggs, then sits. she rears the chicks til they are about 6 weeks old, then she starts laying again. but she only laid the same 9-10 eggs... about 2 weeks... then wanted to sit. but she did start laying faster the second time around, just irregularly til now, her replacement chicks are 7 weeks old, she's been laying regularly for a week....she's only a year old, and she's on her third round of chicks. I will share some of Violets chicks with her if all 6 remaining eggs hatch... she's still sitting on that GLW egg, but I'm not confident. this is Violets first round at hatching... Peach is quite the pro already... I like to think that in 5 years, Peach will be the mother to my entire flock (or the majority anyway)

ramble ramble...don't wait, go get her. give her eggs as soon as she likes her spot. I know you'll love her. Peach can cover 5 LF eggs no problem. can't wait to see pics!

The girl only wants $10 a hen. Already bought 2 and a rooster from her. Bantams are her project, but she is going to college in the fall. So she is cleaning house so to speak. I think I will go get one and another hen and rooster (since the coon got mine :() on Thursday. Then it'll be egg finding time.

Just make sure she is broody before you go buy fertile eggs. If she is really broody she will spent all of her nights and days on that nest only getting up once a day to do her business and grab something to eat. When mine went broody(my big BO) it was a week before I caught her off of the nest. I guess she did get up but I never caught her off of the nest. Give your broody any kind of eggs (even golf balls will work) to sit on till you know if she is serious or not. Just my limited experience. Hope it helps
