Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Congrats, Sally!
Cheeka, glad you caught the dog.
I collected eggs throughout the day yesterday, and only got 7 total. That is counting the one from Beth. In the past maybe two months, if I collect eggs earlier in the day, the chickens will stop laying! They are (mostly) adults, and didn't have that problem until recently.

I took Beth and Baby away from the chicks this morning. I also got the last LH out of the grow out pen. I left the accidental White Rock in the layer pen. She is only one week shy of going in there anyway. No problems adding the girls in the morning. No one so much as said boo (or cluck) to them.
Now to decide what to do about the other JG going broody.

Two eggs, I guess. Okay, maybe three or four. I have no idea what to do with more chicks, though!!

Glad Chester is safe, nothing to report...I am so anxious now...also today i fed the girls yogurt and the broody that I was going to stick the chicks under....she came out! I was in complete shock because there was two white hens in the box and they both jumped out at the site of yogurt....I have offered that broody all kinds of treats to lure her out and never once did she come out....now I am unsure if I should give her chicks ...and I don't even want to think about it because I don't even know if I will have chicks

I feel like biting my nails (which I don't normally do) but its driving me nuts. I keep reading that between pip and zip could take twenty four hours....how do yall wait through this?

Oh sorry I haven't posted pictures for some reason the ipad wont post pictures anymore...I will get one of the pip up in a second though.

so cool Sally, and I would try to give broody chicks, best if they are raised by their own kind... but you'll know immediately if she'll take them, you can supervise so she won't get to do serious injury.

MC, I wish we lived closer, I'd be so able to help you with excess chicks... funny how your gang will interrupt their laying like that... funny annoying, not funny haha...

I was busying around the house when I heard the egg song, in the front yard

. that's odd, I'm thinking... and I go to see what's the hulabaloo... it's Blossom, and she's standing next to the day lilies and their nice long fronds that create a lovely cool shady spot... I didn't find her egg though. I found 2 blue ones. they are from today, I would have seen them... so I told her to go on with herself and get it done... and sure enough, about 15 minutes later, her deep green egg was there. So, I now have another spot I have to check, but it's easy... it's right next to the driveway, I won't forget.
Chester... such a good boy... I'm so glad he didn't disappear. I've really become attached to him.

17 Eggs today! the non-layers? Peachy, of course... no questions there... and both RIR's. no true "brown" egg. only creams of varying shade. I wondered how quickly they would burn out, figured 2 years, as they would lay about 28 eggs per month, rarely skipping a day. they are only 15 months old, and have slowed waaaaaaay down. 2-3 eggs per week if I am lucky. Violet did give it her all for brooding, she's so young it's not the worst thing that none of the eggs hatched... she might try again next year. she is officially Not Broody. and she is huge! she can easily cover 14-15 LF eggs, or feed a family of 6 for 2 days. Rose is also large, larger than all the other birds, BR's and EE's... but she's smaller than Vi, she'd only feed a family of 4, for 2 days...

I had company over tonight for dinner, good friend and her grandchildren, 1 boy, 8, 1 girl, 7. their dad has chickens, but he has only LH and RIR, and they are just "chickens" and are either mean or flighty. the kids don't enjoy them, but they love eggs... anyway, they were amazed at the variety of birds, and amazed that they could pet most of them, and they had a blast running around with Chester and Ruby all around the yard. both dogs are so pooped, they are making a symphony of snores! it was hotter than snot, but there was a nice steady wind. so steady in fact... I got sunburned a bit.

so because of all the company, I didn't get to take all the photos I planned... the Perma-Wee Boys really love the lilac, it's such a perfect spot for them. Peaches chicks, who are getting quite large now almost 10 weeks, hang out with them. they get along so well, I may move Peach and her kennel nest into the small broody pen and give the larger portable pen to the 7 youngins'.
