Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

I've got 2 new to me bantam roos. One is a OEG, the other I have to research some. he's a Dutch something. quite beautiful, but I only got a few pics yesterday, not the greatest as Mylee was crowding them some.

Dutch is a bantam breed that doesn't have a large breed counterpart. The signs of a Dutch are the white ear lobes and blue legs, and also the way he holds his wings down to hide his hocks. He isn't one of the accepted colors (as of 2001) which lists silver, light brown, and blue light brown. Full grown roo will be a whopping 21 ounces. He's very cute. Is he better behaved than the OEGB? I have to return my SOP to the library tomorrow.

Lindz sorry to hear about your flock

. That sounds like a nightmare kind of day. I hope whatever got them is gone, but I am sure your going to be extra alert tomorrow. This reminds me of another forum thread OK had that had me following him when I first got on BYC about predators. It also makes me think of ACW.

I hope everyone else had a better day. How is the egg hatching experiment going?

W4W how is the eye? I thought I noticed a pink comb today rather then a bright red...I scrubbed everything down and segregated her.. Everyone else is looking good.

We have work on the shed coop today (woohoo). I have my sister coming into town tomorrow with my 7 year old niece. She is so psyched about meeting chickens.

My dog Maggie is acting up again...remember a few months back when I had to let her sleep in my bedroom? Basically the same behavior....but now my hubby is home and he doesn't budge on her having to sleep in her crate. Which means she is back to her 'alerting' bark or sitting outside until all hours of the night.

Hey Lindz, I was checking in with someone and I ended up reading some of her blog again and I came upon something interesting to what you mentioned about fat....and it sounds like its good...

Might be worth it for you to do what you thought was right

She was let out of jail within two hours. If she had a lawyer pleading her case he would be crying "insanity". And I would have to agree. So jail is really useless. And I get tired of hearing her scream bloody murder while she is in jail.
LOL earplugs!

Okay so my Dad wanted to see the little rooster today and he ofcourse let the big girls out too...so I was in the garden and he is laughing hard so I come over to have him tell me that he believes I may be right that the little one is a rooster. He said that Charlotte went at the little girl chick and the EE put out his wings and ran right at her. He is not even a month old and he was trying to fight with my GLW. Either way it had my dad laughing and me shaking my head and ignoring them all. After that though the chicks actually came out and grazed with the big girls around. It was kind of funny. My dad was walking around with one of my Older girls feathers in his hair.

I am so excited for my eggs. I hope they don't take too long to get here. Now I need to find a home for this little EE Roo because if he keeps up this behavior no one around here will be willing to eat him and everyone will convince me to keep him.
Ugh yep I get a guilt trip on every Roo from my DDs

I don't see an incubator in my future... not as long as I have Peach anyway. I like letting her do all the work, and then I don't have something else to forget to check on... I've managed to time chicks within a week of Mylee's arrivals and I do have my local wonderful "hatchaholic" - I really do call her that with the utmost love... she's very very good at hatching and she has gorgeous birds, and so far, she has always had chicks when I've needed them... Peach just blows my mind that she will take any and all so easily. Right now, she is behind the lilac with her entire family, the oldest are now 13 weeks, and it is very rare that Peach chases them off. she only does when they try to take something she's dug up for the babies, and then it's not very far... they get the message... I am hopeful that these girls will want to brood like their Mama. that would be so cool. her first hatch, Pebble, is doing great, I visited with him last week, but I had forgotten my camera, the good cell phone only had 5% battery remaining, and it needs 7% for the camera to function... so I had to use my pay-as-you-go phone which is crappy and I don't have any cable (yet) to get them up on the computer. I'll get back over soon. he's beautiful and very sweet. my BR Betty is his Mother, she almost has blue eyes, Wilma has brown. Pebble has almost blue eyes. and I really think Si is his Father. he's not very large... he's big... just not as big as Archie or Royce by the same age and his personality is the bomb! which really makes me think it's Si... my friend who has him... his Mom is 86 and she adores both the birds, she has collected 16 eggs so far from Winnie, says they are as delicious as my girls eggs, and she showed me that Pebble will crow on command for her. I have to get a video of that!

I have to do my time outside with the flock, Mylee just came in and told me it's my turn... and she is doing dishes.

sending good hatch vibes!

Quote: I candle at day 14 and at lock down if i need to. Less I mess with the eggs the better hatch i get.

I might add that in two weeks RK Broody will have a wonderful life surrounded by her chicks and separated from everyone else so she can grow feathers and raise her chicks in peace. I will post pictures and keep everybody up to date on this story. Can't wait to see her feathered out and teaching her chicks. Almost like she knew that going broody was the answer to a better life

10 days to go on the hatching countdown. RK broody is a rock solid broody hen. Consider this. Since she has gone broody three weeks ago I have not caught her one time off of her nest of eggs. It I didn't know better I would think her legs have been cut off. Not even once. I know she has to eat and drink. But her determination and dedication is unbelievable. Reminds me I need to go check on my eggs that I am hatching.

OK, lil RK Broody will be such a changed bird after her chicks come. and once her babies are grown, they should help defend her from the rest of the flock... unless you get all roos... then they'll mount her

W4W, Dutch and OEGB get along great, Dutch dominates OEGB oddly enough... so that's why. I feel bad for feather foot... he took a beating, he was totally fine after about an hours rest in the apple coop. but I felt terrible. I won't let that happen again. I'll test OEGB with the big boys one day soon.
Dutch is an absolute sweety. he doesn't bother anyone, and he really got into a dust bath yesterday, he's a great fit with the gang. so gentle, that he lets Mylee catch him and hold him for long periods. so even tho' he's not to the SOP of anything, he's gorgeous and staying. not so sure about the OEGB for the long term... I need another pen! Craig's List here I come! (well, after work...)

Went down this morning to let everyone out (I will be outside more often today.) I had to wash out feeders and waterers, and while I was down there Amelia laid her egg, which I put directly under Clarabelle. That makes 3 small eggs and 1 large egg under her. I may put tomorrows under her too, but that will be the last. I don't think she will be able to cover any more. I was looking at everyone and trying to figure out what I am going to do about a rooster. I contacted the guy that I got Doodle and the girls off of, and he thinks he may have an extra Blk. Cochin Roo. Before I tell him for sure I want it, I need your all's expertise... LOL

This is a fair chick that my dad had.... I am thinking it may be an Australope. I just can't decide if it is a pullet or cockerel. This is the one that is afraid of everything, and everyone in the coop! I can't get close enough to get a good look at feathers much. I do know that they aren't as "sharp" looking as Doodle's were, but I don't know that they are as rounded as some of the girls' either. I haven't heard anything but cheeping from it either.
