Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Today was my sons first day of Kindergarten, he went on the bus and my husband met him at the school and took pictures, wished him luck. He says it was a good day.

We have what looks like a female rhodebar out and 9 more with pips.

I'm really surprised that she left while one was actively hatching... maybe however many chicks she has now is the max number of eggs she should get in the future.

I'm really hoping that one pulls through and the rest hatch...

I would slip it under her and watch if you can...I have one chick out.

Ok, I went down to put everyone up for the night, and Clarabelle is back in the original nesting box, with babies underneath. I have this crazy idea, that hey if I am going to slip a chick under her why not just put the eggs back under her for the night and get up before dawn in the morning and check on them. So, she is now back on the nest of eggs and chicks. This may totally blow up in my face, but I figure it was worth a shot! I will go check on them again before I go to bed, and I hope that Lil' pip has hatched by then. If we can just get that one more to hatch then I will be happy. (I will still probably bring the others in the house to give them a few more days if she is off the nest again.



Sallysec: Yay on your little peepers! Hope they all hatch successfully! The thread is going to be filled with pictures of fluffies!

I know Cheeka has the oldest, then OK, then me and Sallysec... Is there anyone else that has new chicks at the moment?

I am getting what will be my last shipment of eggs at the end of this month. BCM's. I forgot how many I ordered, it has been so long! They will be shipped eggs and I have had mixed luck with them. Although I currently have 10 BCM's that I picked up at the auction 2 months ago, because I couldn't possibly wait until September.

Not sure I could do a broody for the hatching though. I like to see them developing. I do like the broody raising them though!

Eggs hatching over several days means that the broody will have to get up several times to eat, drink and do her business. She knows where her nest is and will return when it is time to sit again. For a comparison Wild Turkeys roost in trees at night and fly down in the morning to eat, drink, and then go sit on her eggs that are laid on the ground. Personally I would put all of my faith in that broody and leave her be. Broody hens are the worlds greatest incubators. Just my opinion and I am no expert on this stuff. All the more reason for me to leave it to the broody. Good luck to you lindz however you decide to go about it. A poor hatch means we get to try again......

till we get it right. Well that's my excuse and i'm sticking to it.

I have pretty much decided that she will hatch whst will. I can't get the temperature stable in the throw together incubator. If she hatvhes at least the pipped one I will be happy. When I took the eggs back down she tucked them back under her like they hadn't been gone. They were getting cool earlier or I would have left them then. I guess what is meant to be will be.

Good Luck Lindz....I actually have two sets of chicks

the older ones born in July...and these guys...yep I said these guys because there are now two out and about. 1 CCL & ! Rhodebar. I am pretty sure the rhodebar is female....the CCL I think is a girl but it is still so wet that it looks like a black chick still

Off to bed now, two more look like they are close to zipping. Still six after that with pips. I think I will end up with 10. I know for sure three eggs are out, so the best I could get is 11.

I have been singing the same song. I have also been researching incubators.

So far have not come close to ordering. Maybe Santa will bring me one for Christmas or, even better, some bantam Cochins that will all be sweet pullets and grow up to be supreme broodybators ala Peachy the Great!
