Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Got the cutest little brown egg today! First one for my 19 week pullets. :D She is most likely one of the black stars since one of them has a very red and larger comb and wattle. :D Some of the others are catching up so we are getting eggs now! Well one anyway!
She laid it by the door and not the nesting boxes but its not really a problem yet anyway. And she will no doubt learn. :D

Congrats on the new egg! I have a new layer too!

Now I have to figure out who lays speckled eggs!

So, for weeks now, I have been getting one egg every other day. I figured out they are molting. They are only 6 months old, and just got their feathers. Now they are getting new ones? They have hardly used the ones they had! And, they just practically started laying, now they quit laying to grow feathers!

I was only seeing a few feathers here and there. I thought it would look like what I read somewhere, "a pillow fight". The last week though there have been many more feathers on the ground, but no one looks as bad as RK Broody! So, today, I got three eggs! Woohoo!

I'm sure in a few months, I will be looking to give away my eggs because I have so many, but until then.....

annewandering, welcome! and congratulations!

Sully, congrats for the pee wee speckler! so cute!!

8 Eggs today, and 2 more huge loads of dirt removed plus another half load spread about near the day lilies. I can stand up straight inside the dome!

Mylee leaves tomorrow morning. I'm gettin' sad. but she's packed up and going home with all clean laundry... her toe looks great today... I bet it will be hard for her to readjust to city living. she can't just run outside with basically nothing on but a pair of shorts. she can't just run outside anyway... she has to be supervised every second... she's going to me miss the country life. I hope my house sell quickly!!!

Thanks Cheeka! Sad that Mylee is leaving. For both of you. You were so lucky to have her around for such a long visit this time! The dome must look amazing all cleaned out. Someone's garden is going to be awesome next year! My two aunts, both of them realtors, say to put your house on the market when it is ready. Doesn't matter the time of year. You never know, someone might be visiting for the holidays, looking for the perfect house (yours), you would hate to miss out on that opportunity! Good luck with the sale, whenever you decide to list!

the only room not updated at all is the master bedroom. it needs work. but it's such a personal space, it might be wise to leave that to the new owner... it's got horrible yellow and green carpet, and old old green wallpaper. old. the ceiling needs work as it's that tile stuff that falls down after a few decades, and a section did loosen last year, all i did was take some 1 x 3 boards and screw them into the studs to hold it up. I should at least paint the room... but the Realtor is coming tomorrow, taking photos and everything... it was supposed to be yesterday, but with Mylee still here, it was just too difficult.

I think the dome looks awesome! and wow is the dirt excellent... I was filling a bathing hole outside with some premium stuff, Rose hopped right on the pike ,started scratching, found a worm, tossed it aside! and took a bath... Yancy got the worm...

the Chicken Chick posted a link for this article, it's so cool...
Eyes on the target: Why birds bob their heads

Why do birds bob their head when they walk?

a.gif
Watch chickens or pigeons walk around on the ground, and you can't help but notice that they move their heads back and forth as they walk. If they speed up their steps, the head bobbing speeds up too. Not all birds do this, but many that walk instead of hopping do.

This head motion looks silly, and it may look like random head waving, but it's not. If you look closely, or take videos and watch them in slow motion, you will see the head actually stays in one place while the body walks past it. It then is jerked forward and put in front of the body and the body walks past it again.

What this behavior does is keep the head still and in one spot as long as possible. By keeping the head still, the bird gets a better look at the world and is able to see things more clearly. It can focus on one spot for a longer period of time.

This tactic is especially useful for seeing motion. Birds are very interested in moving things: small moving objects to catch and eat (such as insects), and large moving objects that might be dangerous and need to be avoided (such as hawks). Detecting movement while you are moving is hard; the best way to do it is to stand still. The head bobbing of birds allows them to detect movement while they are moving too.

Why don't other animals move their heads like this? Have you tried it? Although you, too, can look silly while you walk, your neck just isn't long enough to keep your head still for long enough to make a difference. Birds, though, have surprisingly long necks. Even birds that look like they have no necks - such as doves, chickadees, or quail -- actually have long necks. Much of a bird's neck is coiled in an S-shaped curve hidden by the neck feathers. They can extend their necks out pretty far when they want to. It is this long, flexible neck that allows birds to bob their heads effectively when they walk.

Been soooo busy. I haven't had a chance to get on. Saturday rain. 7 eggs. Sunday was perfect. I got 18 out of 18 hens. Who could want for more. Monday and today. 13 each day. I can live with that.

A kindred spirit.

I have squatters but no eggs!!! >

Squatting is an excellent sign. You should get some eggs soon. One of my tiny Serama pullets laid her first very tiny little egg yesterday. These guys don't seem to squat that I've noticed. Hopefully the other 3 girls will get it in gear soon. Even if all 4 lay, it's still not the equivalent of one large egg!

Tomorrow? I'm really going to miss the Mylee Reports. She's going to have such great memories of her times with you. Virtual hugs!

oh what a sad morning. we're gettin' ready, and Mylee is chattering away about going home on the long long road. and she keeps saying "don't worry Omi, I'll be back tomorrow" she will be back at least one more time, to help me make the big move or just to visit bc the house hasn't sold yet... but it will be at least a couple of months. I am so lucky, this visit was almost 7 weeks... as much as I spoil her, she spoils me... she fed the dogs, cats, chickens, collected eggs, helped me dig... helped make my coffee and all the food we cooked... helped clip Chester to his leash and outside run... and countless other kindnesses that I will sorely miss.
