Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

I say give us a whirl OK, if it's too soon... we'd still like to see pictures. and super Congrats if Little Roger has started laying, must be... if you got 7... unless you missed one from yesterday???

just talked to Mylee! she and her Oma are in Ohio, I forget which town, but they are snug in a hotel, had a great supper, and she was more interested in playing with the hair dryer in the bathroom... all afternoon I was missing her. free range wasn't the same. too quiet.

the Realtor made it by tonight and got pictures and we did the contract. it will be listed tomorrow. I'm listing at a somewhat lower end price, less room for negotiations but it should generate good interest. she was very impressed with the counters, she had seen them when they were orange, and had never heard of the Rustoleum conversion kit. she has to use my photos of the dining room, it's full of boxes and stuff that I don't need everyday, but can't go in the garage... but I took photos of that room from every possible angle when it was completed and empty...

6 Eggs today

Little Roger's first egg! Cool. One of the Serama pullets laid the first egg of that bunch. She was hatched end of May, so only about 16 weeks. Just the one so far.

OK, my gold sex link had a very serious limp last summer. Couldn't find anything obviously wrong with leg or foot, and she spent a lot of time sitting. Still managed to follow the others around and to roost, but no running. It took several months (4 maybe?) for it to heal and it was reinjured during that time. Luckily no one messed with her when she was down. She walks fine now. It's amazing the injuries they can recover from. Just takes a little time. Hopefully Little Bo will keep getting better.

By all means, post pictures of the chicks. At 4 weeks it's all about the comb size with those breeds. And if you see any wattles coming in, you can bet on boys.

that's right! I meant to say congrats to you too, for your little serama egg!

I've gotta get a pic of my white EE, she's about 16 weeks old now, no eggs yet, but I noticed something today when she hopped up on the roost this afternoon - she's not only got muffs and a beard, she has wattles! small wattles are coming in over her beard. none of my bearded EE's have them, but none of them have straight combs like she does... so...

I'm up too late again. g'nite everyone!

Congrats on all the new layers! Can't wait til mine are amongst! Hope little Bo continues to improve. the cochin and Maran chicks are growing fast and getting feathers. Clarabelle is very pale in the comb and wattles. I think being broody really brought her down, and now she feeds the chicks first. Any suggestions to help her put weight back on? I am guessing extra PIE... LOL

24 Weeks and still no eggs!!!!!!! I must e doing something wrong. I don't get it. The breeds are Wyandotte, EE and Australorp. They're getting layer pellets, table scraps and plenty of water with ACV. Advice please this is ridiculous.

Some just take their time. And sometimes it can take 30+ weeks for them to start laying. I have seen most people say theirs start between 22-28weeks. It just depends on the birds. And if I remember all 3 of those breeds tend to be slow to mature. Especially the EE. I may be wrong though.

Still just one chick. The boys said they saw a 2nd one hatching last night and heard it peeping. But when Chicken Boy went down to do morning chores, baby was dead in the shell. Never made it much past the hole it first made. There was a large portion of shell gone with just membrane there. Didn't look shrink-wrapped, more like it just ran out of steam. CB is all sad now. She still has 4 eggs, 2 each duck and chicken. Still sitting tight. Today is day 23. Little Bit is very active, CB has given it chick starter and scrambled eggs the last few days. Big Red is constantly "talking" to baby. I sure hope they do ok.

Sad Panda

KLF-NH, greetings and welcome! I would bet you will have eggs within 2 weeks from the Wyandotte, say somewhere around or before 26 weeks, another week and you'll have eggs from the Austrolorp. for the EE... probably not before 28-30 weeks... you're not doing anything wrong, they are just growing up without any older hens to watch lay...Nature is nature, and they will lay when they are ready, but it seems (at least in my flock) that the new additions lay earlier than my original girls... because they have an example to follow.

try PIE! and maybe a phony egg in the nest box to encourage them... hang in there! it will happen

Waiting is tough, but the longer you wait, the better the eggs will taste!

Take them off the layer pellets. They don't need the extra calcium until after laying has started, and some have suggested that too much unneeded calcium can cause problems. For now, better to feed an all flock type of feed with oyster shell offered separately. Also, if it's very hot in your area, I would limit the ACV in the water. It's fine when temps are mild, but much over 85* it can actually stress them more because it alters their blood chemistry.

Probably they are just taking their time to mature, and the changes I'm suggesting won't make any difference. Also, I don't think you've harmed them or anything, just trying to think of optimal conditions for them. Bright red, large combs and wattles (except EEs) and red faces are a good sign that they are getting close. Also, they can get very moody and grumpy. Golf balls in the nest boxes work too if you don't have fake eggs.

Good luck

Just had to share! Gertrude loves my daughter (who is 2 and still a little skittish of the animals). This day she followed her around the whole time we were outside! Ignore the Hubby walking in front of me at the end...
