Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Hello everyone. Coming to you from my new laptop, an anniversary (this weekend) present from my dad. It is very fast compared to the old deceased dinosaur, but has Windows 8 which is a bit Greek to me so far. Hopefully I can figure out how to get my pictures loaded soon so I can post some. Haven't been able to for quite a while.

Lindz, sounds like you had a case of chicken frenzy going on with those escape artists. Clarabelle is a good mama, defending her babies like that. The video was very cute. What was the treat? A special millet? They sure enjoyed it.

Sillie is awfully cute. Almost makes me want to get one...

Poor Hubby hit a deer yesterday morning on the way to work. Thankfully he wasn't hurt, but it messed the car up pretty badly, shattered windshield and all. The deer was running across lanes in heavy traffic and appeared out of nowhere from behind an oncoming SUV. He didn't even see it, so no time to react. He initially thought that a flying turkey had hit the windshield and couldn't believe that it had been a deer, poor critter. The insurance lady said she averages 4 claims per day from folks hitting deer.

Now, to help you understand just how much this thread has affected me, while driving to go pick my hubs up from work yesterday (because his car had to be towed), the only thing I could think about was finding the dead deer along the road so I could get it and have treats for the girls!

Road kill for the chickens! What's next?! (Un)fortunately, the deer was gone by the time I got there, so someone else must have happy chickens.

Happy Friday, everyone. Have a great weekend.

I have a question.......Now that the Delaware rooster is gone and I only have a RIR rooster.......and Roger is a Barred Rock.......If I hatch her eggs would they be called "Rhode Island Roger's"
HEHE i am sure Roger expects that! You might get red sexlinks out of the cross too! Mabel X Red gives me black girls and white dotted boys on their heads.
Same for Rebel X Mabel! I love the cross, huge hardy roos and fantastic laying hens.
Fruit Loop, my bantam mutt, is thinking about going broody again! Went into the coop to get eggs and she was pancaked down in a box.

I know fall isn't ideal for hatching because of weather and humidity, but I live in Texas. Near a bunch of water. Humidity is often atleast 50%+. Should I let her hatch some? Or buy some one day olds? (Provided she sticks to it, today is only day one.)
I would but I am chicken crazy! if you have room, go for it
big_smile.png

Alrighty, I promised some new pictures of the babies! Here ya go! Everyone seems to be doing ok with the cocci treatment, and I didn't see anymore blood today! I am thinking we are at a 2:5 ratio of pullets:cockerels....
barnie.gif

Glad to hear the cocci is gone. Scary! I do see a few future roos but they are adorable!
Peach actually likes the new girls! they live next door to each other... actually, they share a chain link wall... the new girls are quite shy and didn't want to head right out with Peach as she was trying to introduce them to the yard and the lilac...

talk about a tight knit group! it was several minutes before they let an inch of sunshine come between them...

they did very well, and put themselves away... so funny! they are just beautiful, and hopefully as the days pass, I will be able to get better pictures...

it was a perfect day! those riders are my friends... lucky ladies!
Love them, just beautiful! But I love black birds

I must have missed your post, Are they Ameraucana?
Its so pretty where you are right now. Hows the looking for houses going?
Cheeka I will tell her when she gets home! She is already so mature it is easy to forget that she is only 7.
With 6 people living in one house it always looks like a tornado came through! I can't keep up! Lol.
LOL, so not kidding. My mom and dad are "hoarders" and will not throw anything away. DH is the same.
Theres always 6-8 adults here, and I get so frustrated! Youngest DD and her DH to be are as bad.
My oldest and her SO also leave everything sit.
I hate finding empty pop cans sitting, used paper plates, I am the clean freak, and always go thru disposing of trash.
I hate wet towels in the hamper Grrrrrr
lindz, please wish your DD a very Happy Birthday! 7 is a wonderful age, the beginning of true human intellectualism paired with childhood innocence. I hope she had the most wonderful year!

the curtains here glowed super orange at sunset, but I was so busy I didn't even peek out to see, as I had left the camera in the car... and didn't want to be tempted to distraction. I'm behind on chores.
no one has come to see the house except realty people. it's not my style to pick up after myself constantly... always to have an empty kitchen sink and a made bed - although, since Chester... I've been better about making my bed. he likes to get back in there after breakfast... he makes it smell like corn chips.

it's going to be gorgeous weather for the rest of the week, mid 60's and sunny... so glad! the gang hasn't been out for days.

Janet, if any of my LF boys were mean it would make my decision so much easier. only Royce is graceful while mating... but the others are at least not as brutal as what your girls have to deal with. wonder why the pecking after is happening - sign of dominance? some of my hens will peck at another hen right after she's been mated... as if she is too lowly to be given attention... one thing I learned, I can't leave more than one LF rooster out at the same time. they double team and then it's more rough. for as long as it takes to regrow feathers... I'm not willing to put them through that again...
Bruce BA and merlin SLW have manners, so far. I am so fed up with the GLWs i could process every one of the roos and not even blink.
The hens are pretty mean too. Its probably the line they are from, last april a year ago. My first GLWs were extras and freebees from a hatch.
Rebel is as bad as Red and both are probably on the real "list", I am really fed up with them.
My oldest GLW hens spike and betsy will stay. Shame, Red is looking so good with all his feathers coming back after moult.
Same for Rebel, he is a handsome guy. Tired of them treating the girls so bad, and getting pecked and kicked myself.
Time to reduce and evaluate before winter.

Beautiful pic and happy Bday to your lil girl!

Big Red, Chicklet and The Boy

The Boy and Ditty
Hehe all are so cute!
Todays PIE........Four dirty eggs
Over Ripe Cherry Tomatoes
Egg Shells
Lettuce
Fat Trimmed From Ham
and a Little Bit Of Scratch To Top It Off

If My Chickens Could Talk They Would Tell You How Awesome I Am
hehe I bet they would!
Quote: Ugh respiratory stuff is such a struggle. Good that you are there to correct the problem, good luck.

Beautiful pics, Cheeka. Idyllic for riding.

Bad luck with the cockerel ratio, Lindz. They sure are cute, though!

Rhode Island Rogers! They should have some barring to keep the prison apparel look.

Turned in the papers for the kitty. Hopefully will hear from the rescue group soon. Spent some time petting her, so sweet and such a little skinny mini.

Oh how exciting! Best of luck for the lil kitty, I haven't had a new housecat in years.
They are always so sweet.

ugh, just got home, longest day in months... I had it pretty good over the summer, but looks like the easy days are gone til Spring... Peach laid today, and only 3 others, now I have moochers...4 Eggs...
hmm.png

I may have found someone to process Carl. I posted a pic and a plea on fb... customary pay for the job, keep the cape and come for dinner... lol...

my Aunt Frankie, such a fun wild lady... has named one of my banty roosters Sampson, (the one who crowed yesterday...) and she wants him. I can just imagine... she'd get one of those pink bags the starlets carry their itty bitty dogs in... and take him everywhere... she's got a great country home in Hiawassi (sp) GA, could use a cute little rooster up there... we'll see...

it's raining, but not hard... I have to go out in a bit and put Sillie on the roost... and grab Peachy's egg...
I love rehoming rather than processing!
Will check it out, so fun!

Happy Birthday Janet!

thanks this was the hard one! Its ok, i still feel like 30

Wait it out, my road island reds surprised me and laid tiny eggs for 3weeks and then produced 3inch eggs. With eggs like this the wait is worth it.
welcome-byc.gif
and u are so right!
hope you feel better, sometimes we all just need a day to catch up on getting some rest. life in general can be so stressful, always go go go...

I took a tour after dark to check on the new arrangements. all is peaceful and quiet - Sillie is perched perfectly and the 4th cochin is perched on the feed dish. thankfully, nose in... She may earn top spot in the flock for Drama. she's gorgeous, super fluffy, well feathered feet and a stink eye that just comes naturally...
Ohh now I see, beautiful birds! Congrats!
I was not a good chicken mama today. I let them out this morning and didn't go back out til feeding time this evening and then it to put them up. ... I have been yucky feeling all day and just couldn't do it. I didn't work on a new quarantine pen either. Maybe tomorrow will be better.
Hope you feel better

well OK, you know what that means... dust off the gear and get a'ready... do you bow hunt? I've made a couple of deals for scraps and carcass parts from folks along my route... I'll end up with way too much.... but I'll give the carcasses first, save the scraps, freeze them...
Bow hunting is my favorite type hunting but requires a lot more time. Gun hunting is easy and it is just a matter of driving a mile down the road to a old farm and picking out a nice doe and shooting it if I just want meat. My freezer stays full of venison year round and Roger knows it. She makes me feel stingy when I don't give it up. A Pieaholic can do that to you.

hello, I'm the freezer inspector.
hide.gif

Thanks for reminding Roger that it is deer season. She has started the "my heart is failing dying chicken act" that only venison can cure. Scratch only treats the symptoms. Here we go again..........

You need earplugs!

Today was a much better day! The girls stayed out all day and everyone enjoyed the millet that cheeka sent them! I am going tomorrow to get the 3 new EE girls! Still have to figure out how to quarantine them, since everyone else free-ranges during the day.... Not sure how to work that out! Any suggestions?
UGH if you have a building, shed, anything away from the main flock that will work.
I look over the new birds, if I see no health issues, mites etc. I have a 2 car garage next to the main coop they can stay in.
Clarabelle and the babies enjoying the treat that cheeka sent them!

Does the video show up green for everyone else? Trying to fix it!
No green just narrow! Otherwise soooo adorable!
Min Min has repurposed my old egg basket...

forgot to share this - my neighbor got a deer and gave me some really good scraps. they devoured every speck.

I thought I would have to chop it up, but nope... I thought I would have to pick up what they didn't eat so as to not attract predators... but again... nope.
pigs.
LOL they know what is yummiest!!!

Jchny my understanding was a RIR over a BR gives you a black sex link aka Rhode Island Rogers but you should know better than me. Glad you checked in and are doing OK

Well I had a CRAZY afternoon! I had to do some rearranging so I could go get my new girls and have somewhere to put them! I ended up separating the big coop into 2 sections with a gate and putting Clarabelle and the babies back into the big coop. I am hoping that this will help with integrating them into the flock a little easier in a few weeks! Anyway, while moving them, I got everyone in the big coop, and one of the chicks jumped out while the door was open and was running around under the coop trying to get away from the other big chickens who were trying to peck it! I was PANICKING! I ended up grabbing Clarabelle and pushing her under the coop toward the baby! She went CR@ZY on the other chickens, then her and the baby finally came out and I was able to catch them! Then Hubby yelled out to close the coop door! The other babies had managed to fit through a gap in the gate and were running around! So, we put them back and was patching holes. Then I went to pick up the new girls! They are GORGEOUS!!!!!!! I am tickled with them! Then I get home with them, and I had stopped and bought some hamburger because it was on sale.... as I was bringing it in the house first I see something on our heat pump unit outside! It took me a minute to figure out that it was one of the Golden Comet girls! My heart sunk! In the chaos of the chicks trying to escape, we had forgotten to open the coop back up, and it was well after dark! So we go out with flashlights to find everyone and put them in the coop. Luckily, everyone but the one girl was roosted on a small fence panel down next to the coop! I proceeded to pick everyone up and try to put them roughly where they normally roost in the coop! I got everyone but Rogue and two of the GC girls in, and he proceeds to peck me anytime I get my hands close enough to him. Unfortunately, the other two girls were between him and the coop wall. I ended up just pushing him off the fence onto the ground, and he ran around for about 10 minutes. I was finally able to grab a leg and throw him in the coop. He will be going to freezer camp very soon! I am not going to deal with a rooster that I can't even get my hands on!
somad.gif
If it hadn't already been dark, he may have already joined that club! Anyway, once we got him up, I went back to the van and got the new girls out and took them down to their new coop! I hope they like it! I plan on getting up early in the morning and making sure everyone is settled in and doing well! Pictures tomorrow!
UGH glad it all settled down. Roos can sure try your patience!
I finally finished reading through this post. It was great! I got hooked on the "waiting it out" and was ready to jump to the end but then you guys all started hatching eggs and I didn't want to know the ending without reading the journey.

Is there room for a second lindz in this group?
wink.png

My countdown has started for 2 groups of chickens
Due week of Oct 28 - 2 white silkies, 2 black copper marans, 2 blush? polish (I went for crazy this round)
Due week of Nov 12 - 5 EE

And I'm waiting on my coop to be finished. I found a great guy on craigslist who is making me one.

From now til then I'll brush up on my PIE making skills and poetry!

Question - Should I make a pie for when they arrive so they know what it is and then hold out for anymore until they are ready to lay to bribe them into giving up eggs?

WOW thats a crazy nite! Glad it all worked out. PIE fixes almost anything!
