Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Hi Sully! Is the run predator proof? Maybe the coop is too hot and they prefer outside. As long as nothing can get them, no reason they can't sleep in the run.

Love the shopping bag hen! Must have been a bit of work for her to get inside.

Hi Sully! nice to hear from you! my BR's lay cream/pink eggs, really cream colored, my EE's pink eggs are a different shade, but they are very close.

no bites on the house, no lookers, nothing. I knew it was a slow time of year, but figured it was worth listing it now, because you never know who will come up for the holidays. plus the vote from this week has said 'yes' to 4 casino's in the upstate area, 2 of which are within a reasonable commute from here... so, maybe that will spur lookers. I've gotten into some really good habits as a result, keeping it very tidy all the time. it's getting easier...

I got home at dark, and felt so bad for my babies, not getting an afternoon range or snack of any kind. Peach laid her egg, and I found 2 more in the apple coop. I was not happy to only find 3 eggs and then I spied a 4th in the dome. so I got to pat everyone goodnight when I went to pick it up.
as long as I get at least 4... sheesh, 4 is terrible. but I'll shut up now...

(tomorrow I won't get any)

I'm pooped, long long day, lots of rain... temps were in the 50's early this morning and steadily got colder as the day progressed. it will be freezing overnight. Ice in the waterer's in the morning!

Been doing more lurking than posting here! MC, sorry for your troubles. I know how lonely it gets. I am here alone too. I do have lots of animals to keep me company, but it is not the same as another human to talk to. Luckily you have lots of friends here to talk to!!

Cheeka, how is the house coming? Any lookers/tire kickers?? Loved the pictures of Mylee.

Love all the new babies! They grow so quickly! My little guys (the Forgotten Ones), are already in that fugly stage with the fluffy heads but the feathered bodies. They look so funny! Unfortunately for me, when they start getting feathers, I start getting impatient for eggs!

I am trying to figure out who has just started laying. Do BR's lay light brown/pink eggs?? They are 6 months old, but so is the Delaware and the Buckeye. The freeloaders, I mean 8 month olds (CL's and AM's) both lay blue, supposedly. But, on a good note, I am up to 3 and 4 eggs per day! The brown ones are finally a large to the XL weight, and the pink ones are just smalls for now. Woohoo! I can start saving them up instead of eating them myself!

Also, when does it click with the chickens that they live in different coop? I hand carry 9 chickens every night (for a month now) to the coop. The go into the run every morning with everyone else, but they don't go into the coop at night with everyone. They like their old pen or the stairs! Go figure!

Weather here now is why I moved here! Still in the 80's during the day, but no humidity and cooler, in the high 60's at night. Just lovely!

I have to say, I love seeing the creative places my chickens find to lay eggs.

Our annual "All You Can Eat" Venison Buffet is coming up. Hope my crop holds out.
ROGER this is for OK. YOU do not need to respond for him.
I signed our family up for the "givein game" program with DNR. I can't get out to hunt deer anymore and really miss venison too.
Hunters join because they want the rack, not the meat or have enough in the freezer for the year.

I bet all the states have it, if anyone else wants to sign up or contribute to the cause.
the Cochins are finally all named! Zira is at the top, the blue is Delilah, the bearded is Josephine, and the Zelda is the beardless black at the bottom front. Delilah was sporting a slight cross beak... remember a while back, I posted a pic... I did nothing. it's gone. her beak is perfect. wonder if she tweaked it somehow and it healed...

WOW they are beautiful! I love all the colors too, blues and blacks are my fav

Then Hubby was late getting home because he had to run by Lowe's hardware to find out about a weed-eater that he had taken back to claim warranty on.... They couldn't fix it, so they gave him a store credit.... He decided to buy me a garden cart that I have been looking at for awhile!

Oh my, I loved pic #2 the most, just precious! That's one your family will treasure years from now.
The carts are sure a huge help, I get tired of carrying so much feed and water everywhere.

W4W-I trust my run to be predator proof during the day, when I am in and out of the house and barn, but not so much at night. In fact tonite when I was putting everyone to bed, there was a small raccoon on the porch of the barn. Cleaning up the mess from the chickens (I use a communal feeder on the porch for the "Outsiders"). It then went into the run (gate was open), to clean up in there. Tonite I left the light on in the coop while I was putting the horses to bed (6:00 and it is dark), and I chased the chickens off the steps and 6 of the 9 were "encouraged" to go into the coop, and they did. Maybe the key is to leave the light on longer??

Cheeka-sending positive house selling vibes your way! It does make it easier to show it when everything is de-cluttered and clean! Makes you wonder why you had all that stuff to begin with. Although it is like Christmas all over again when you unpack the clutter at the new place! I have been here a year now and I am looking at all the stuff I never put away or will never use, and I think I will just get rid of it! I guess if I haven't needed it yet, I won't ever! I spent some time in the run today just watching the chickens. I did see two of the BR's in the nest boxes. One of the NH reds kicked one of them out of the box and went in herself. Later on, there was a small pink egg in there and I know the NH reds are laying brown, almost XL's now. I also think one of my OE is laying but it is a darker brown egg, not green. I think they had too much Marans and not enough AM or whatever blue they used in the mix! Oh well, I can make my own, someday.

Lindz, I too love the pictures. The kids are adorable! Nice dump wagon too!

About the shopping bag hen. I was mucking stalls and I kept hearing this weird noise in the aisle. Every time I walked out of the stall, the noise stopped. Then I just peeked around the corner and I spotted the bag moving. Got out my phone and shot the video. Cracked me up! The other picture is in a wheelbarrow that I had some pellets expanding (for bedding). I went to take a shovel full and I saw the egg. Another day it was in the opened bag of shavings, then on top of a bale of hay. It is like a regular Easter Egg hunt around here, daily.

Its been that way for us too. I have most of the hiding spots figured out.
Most lay in the 7 nest boxes we have. guinea and pekin forget it and drop them wherever.
Most breeds have stopped for the year except my bantam, Quail and silkies.
