Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Watzamadder, don't they allow chickens in swanky Manhattan apartments? Probably only designer chickens like showgirls and modern games!

Good deal for you, Cheeka! Do you know what breed they are?

I like your dark egg. My Welsummer lays a pretty speckled egg like your Marans. Well, she used to. She stopped laying when the others started going broody this summer, continued the sympathy egg strike when her coopmates were molting, and then had a very hard molt of her own. I'm hoping she will start back up this spring. This was the chick I rescued from the not-expected-to-survive brooder at the feed store. Even in the less crowded brooder she was cold and getting stepped on, and when I got her home found that she had an umbilical hernia. Touch and go for the first couple of days, but good ol' TLC did the job. She was my last to begin laying (7+ months) and also grew some short spurs, so I never had high expectations for her to begin with. Named her Grace because, as I told the kids, it's not always in our control.

Gorgeous eggs! I am going to *try* to hatch some marans eggies over new years. I want some darker eggs for my basket. Actually, I would like ANY eggs for my basket, but, theoretically, if my two ever start contributing, then dark eggs would be a nice addition.

The Barred Ones eat quite enough with one head, and they seem perfectly capable of plotting mischief. They certainly don't need any help in either department!

Egg production is directly related to what one consumes. I wouldn't mind having three or four heads if my crop was bigger. Then let that stupid rooster grab me by the neck and see what happens

2 Eggs today, 1 of which is the darker speckled brown on top. had to use the flash or the pic was dark and grainy... now the blue eggs look nuclear... but I don't care, it's the brown I wanted to show off...the speckles are super dark. it's so pretty.

Much darker than the ones I posted. But Comets lay speckled eggs. Posted it for comparison

this is yesterdays then we got the bottom eggs to day the large light one is a first time laying chick from our sex licks, they will get bigger and darker as she starts to lay every day, we have 29 hens so i can not wait to get maybe 20 in one day.

I should be able to cross my RIR rooster with the Delaware hens and produce Red Sex Links in the spring. Might offer Red Sex Link Hatching eggs that will look close to those I posted if someone was interested. Or trade cheeka for some EE's. Or how about a Roger egg X RIR = Black Sex Link AKA Pure Screaming Eggless HellO.......Possibilities are interesting. Should be fun

so many beautiful eggs! makin' me hungry!

so, that lady called me, she is on her way tonight. fine by me... so I went out with water, feed and a cup of corn to sprinkle on the fresh hay that I also just spread around... this way, they will have goodies first thing and won't be extra freaked out because of the move. it's supposed to hover around freezing over night, so the water should be fine - but I'll be up early enough...

she doesn't know breeds, technically, these are her boyfriends chickens, but she has been the one doing all the work... he wants to keep the older girls, all 18 months and give up the 6 month old chicks they hatched this past Spring. he's keeping the rooster too, thank goodness! I told her if I had to take the rooster, I would likely process him... she was cool with that... anyway, they are black, white and red, so I'm figuring Leghorns, RIR's... we'll see... she should be here any second!
