Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

I got had today. I went and picked up a mixed variety of hens, all free. Very exciting, considering the mix will make for a gorgeous egg basket.

Now I know why they were free

One...single....lone.....barred rock. Ahhhh!!!!!!

I've had two other BRs, both loud, and always complaining. Got rid of them. Only to get another!!! I will attempt pictures later, of course, if she grants me permission.

He He - you are DOOMED!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for asking about George. I found someone else in town with new hatched chicks and got Astrid to keep George company. There is much happy chirping and pooping (no, that is not a typo) in the brooder.

It is a Brinsea. I hatched one egg out of seven, but they were shipped, it was my first hatch, they were delayed in the mail, and a zillion other things. I trusted my Brinsea's thermometer, but now that I have tested it with another measuring device, and because George hatched a little early and none of the other eggs hatched, I believe it ran 2 degrees warmer than it said it was. So, check it with another thermometer. Other than that, I love it. Very easy to use. Kept heat and moisture when I did lift the lid because of the dome shape. Very stable. Seemed easy to clean. Vents on the side meant no kitties sleeping on it and screwing up the ventilation. It was fun being able to see the chick so well, instead of through some little window, and when George was in there, she could see me on the outside and respond to me, which was adorable.

Good to hear from you W4W! We're having cold, wet weather. You can have some. Tho tonight it's suppose to get up to 50 degrees! And back down to 4 degrees on Tuesday!!

Was so happy today. I am always able to pick up Phylis but today I was able to pick up on of the BCM and one of the silkies. They are def getting used to me now that they are in the coop!

Can't wait to spend more time w them once they start exploring their run.

Someone is crowing tho.....

And I'm really afraid I'm not going to be able to put my big girl farmer pants on when it comes to these guys (well hopefully girls....).

Whoops-George is so cute!!!! Glad you found a friend!!!

And am I the only one who doesn't have a BR????

BRs are the Cadillac of chickens. Don't believe any of the nonsense you hear about us on this thread. Get one and you will always have one (because we never go away!).

Just got done Skyping with hubby. He was on a short layover in Taiwan, so I put my computer in front of the TV and showed him the first half of the 49er football game. I probably broke a few broadcast rules, but the NFL should be happy that their commercials were also seen in Taipei, at least by one person. Half time rolled around and he had to board the plane to Hong Kong, but at least he got to see some of the game.

Clindz, I will take the moisture but don't send the cold.

We are definitely not set up for that kind of cold around here. I think there might be one small snow plow in the entire county and maybe one or two people have snow tires. We'd have to borrow Roger's dog cart to get around!

Whoops, I think you've sold me on the Brinsea. Cat proof is a bonus and I do love the view you get. It will also keep me limited on how many I can hatch, which is another bonus!
Astrid is cute. If she is an Australorp you will be happy. They are beautiful and calm, a good companion for George.

And we have lovely liquid eyes.

CLindz, I don't have any BR's either! After all the talk on here, I have decided not to add any of the "Barred Ones" to my flock!

Very cute chicks Whoops! I have been wanting to get a Brinsea, but have been trying to talk hubby into letting me get a incubator because that means more chickens....

Jchny, I have heard wonderful thinks about Nustock as well. I have a tube of it, but haven't needed it. Yet.... Hope your girls gets better quick!

Cheeka, LOVE Olive and Opal!!!!!!! And the Biscuit to Bakery name change cracks me up!

Ok, sounds like you may have a uprising in your coop if Roger has anything to say about it!

In our yard, we had the stomach bug, and then the 3yo was running a 103.7 fever... took her to the dr. and she has strep, and on antibiotics since Thursday.... Now this morning the oldest DD is running a fever and has slept all day. Oh the joys of having little ones!
I got 7 eggs this morning when I first let everyone out and I didn't get any more today. Yesterday I got the most ever with a whopping 9 with 6 comet eggs and 3 EE eggs! Almost double digits!

Between Psychochicken the EE and my Barred One, I am not sure I would know what to do with a calm chicken. I am looking forward to watching Astrid and George grow.

55 degrees here today. Raining right now. Snow tonight. Schools already closed. High temperature of -2 below zero tomorrow. Tuesday it gets worse. Typical Kentucky weather. 57 degree temperature change in 24 hours. Get ready Roger.
