Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Yay on your eggs! I got 6 this morning.... 5 G.comet and 1 EE..... I'm going to be watching for another cream colored egg, and a blue streaked one! Guess I may dye her up again tonight!

Mine have been saying that to me for 27 weeks.

So, are your girls 27 weeks old now, or is that how long you've been waiting since you got them and they are actually older? Pullets hatched in summer frequently don't lay until the following spring, especially if they come from a breeder and are slower developing types. My girls were hatchery chicks from early March, and about half of them were over 25 weeks before the onset of laying.

Hang in there!!

Not trying to destroy all hope, just thinking there's probably nothing wrong with any of them and that you are at the mercy of mother nature. Bright red enlarged combs and faces and squatting will give you a 1-2 week warning, but the wacky weather may cause more delays.

My BA as a young pullet with dark face and comb.
Red, but not yet laying. Think she was about 26 weeks here. Took about 2 weeks more. This is the hardest time to wait, because they look ready.

Slightly bigger wattles and comb when she started laying, but I have to rely on pics to notice the differences. Her face never did get red. Matilda is one of my "stealth layers" too. I rarely see her on a nest, and of all my girls, she's the only one that ever had a hidden nest.

They all have their own schedules, of course, but upping the protein in their diet can help.

On the bright side, we get to know you on this thread because of waiting it out!!!

Hi

They are 27 weeks old hatchery pullets. The EE runs across the yard to squat for me, which is hilarious because she used to attack me and you can tell even she is astonished by this development. The barred rock has had a crimson comb for a while - redder than your pictures. I know I am at the mercy of mother nature about it, but, I still retain whining privileges.

They will lay when they lay. I am just enjoying grumbling about it.

Haha I know what you mean. I still relive the excitement when someone else gets their first egg! I think Cheeka is right, and you'll see an egg very soon. Meanwhile, whine at will!

My guys have perpetually dirty combs. They gorge on apples in the fall, splashing sticky juice all over themselves, and then dust bathing. It's not pretty. The Ameraucana's beards are the worst. Usually the winter/spring rains clean them up, but no rain so far...

Oh did I tell you that when we eviscerated Clyde we never found his heart! We found a few tiny pieces of organ tissue that may have been anout the size of a nickle all together but I don't know what happened. We looked for several minutes and never found it. Very strange!

Hate to tell you but most roosters don't have a heart

I got one egg from Penny so far. Fingers are crossed for more from the other 3 but... it has been really very cloudy and grey out for weeks. Hoping... hoping...
