Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Sorry about your neighbor, CLindz. It's sad when we lose not only the older generation but the knowledge and (occasionally) wisdom they have. Maybe you will get lucky and have someone move in next door who wants to get back to the land. Not too many big pieces of land around here anymore either. Big old places are split up and the nouveau gentry move in, build mini-mansions and hire landscapers and workers to make the beautiful wild countryside look like a city park. 2 deer killed on the road into town this week. Not many places for them to go because of all the fencing put up to protect all the new private "parks."

They move here because it's beautiful and then change it beyond recognition.

Welcome to everyone joining! this is a really fun thread and some awesome people too

W4W your pictures were just touching, it feels good to go back to where you grew up.
Chickens are not laying, don't blame them. temps are crazy here!
My bantam OEGs are but they are in my office trailer! First goose egg yesterday...
Quail, OEGB, Pekin and goose....

Pekin are easily a jumbo egg. if that helps to judge size lol!
bloody, so may be a new layer. having problems figuring out my hens on the Africans and Embdens.
This one is about 3.5" long so I think its my chinese girls.

I'm sad today. We just found out our 87 year old neighbor died Friday night. We knew something had happened on wed night but his family doesn't know us so they didn't tell us anything til we just happened to run into them today.

He was an old time crochety farmer and reminded me so much of my grandfather who I adored. His daughter told us how much he liked us (and then said how shocked she was because he typically didn't like the neighbors).

Now we're hoping they don't sell the land to a developer because he would have hated that. He was so happy we moved in and were starting a farm. But we live in jersey and land is vastly disappearing to gaudy houses!

So God bless Ralph!!!!! Wish we had gotten to know him better!!!

I am so sorry for your loss.
I love our neighbor Jack, he is about 60 something and plays with the young bulls every day.
He is still very spry and jumps a fence pretty quick! but I fuss him. a ton of mad bull is dangerous!
I fear to hear bad news, his son and grandsons are all totally unafraid of the cows.
I have to admit its just amazing to watch them interact.
Theres 44 acres next to us in a trust we want, BADLY. The owner, since passed, proclaimed it will not be sold for development.
Thankfully the children are honoring his wishes, but last check the land is way out of our reach

The property I live on was once a farm. I can't get an accurate number of acres, but I can tell you that the last 4 acres are Legrand property. One acre to Uncle Paul's oldest son, one to the next oldest (both died in the past two years) one acre to his sister (my house) and the last acre, his sister owned, and it was a school, a store, a dance hall, and finally sold to a church that sold it to a family of hunters. My hope is to reclaim the land that the hunters now own. As it is, the hunters are ... Not nasty, but not someone you want to cross. They would sue you if they felt threatened. The two guys that own it are in their seventies or eighties. They respect privacy enough that they would not sell it without talking to me. Only one guy has kids, and I have met them. I need to worry about them. The building sits on the edge of my driveway, only about thirty yards from my bedroom window. CLOSE! I just can't let someone new own that property!
Is it wrong that I dream of the things I will do with that property? I want to have a small restaurant and/or bakery. I would HAVE to get more chickens to supply eggs. Don't think I will get into the pig and cow thing. I would do fresh turkeys for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and an occasional chicken BBQ's with fresh meat.
Or... I could use the house for my annoying (and very large!) family. I am in the middle of my family in NJ, and Ohio (4 hours to each area) so I would be the best choice for Christmas. The cabin/building has plenty of beds, a nice kitchen, bathroom (outhouse too. They just got indoor plumbing!) and long table to seat the 14 of us (and growing). And with it so close to the house, the little ones would be safe over there while the adults are in the main house being loud half the night!
Or... I could let the cabin be a really huge chicken coop! I would need at least 1,000 chickens to fill it! Hmmm...

Seriously, I need to get that property.

MC I could do that, love them that much! But coop wise not happening... We sure are enjoying the extra roos. I really like having a mixed flock too.

Roger lays goose eggs

I am so jealous of everyone's properties! I'm on a postage stamp it seems like. I'm somewhere between a quarter and a third of an acre. Not nearly enough for me. I so wish I was in a position to move!

I wish I had a daily chicken report to give. Same as yesterday. So far all my chickens just look like eggs
