Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Whoops, that's great news! it's just a matter of another day or 2 and the big girl house will be home.

mortie, I used a rubbermaid tote to bring the chicks back and forth, still hard to round them up, but once they were in, with a light wire top... it was easy.

it's chilly and dreary, with rain tonight. I got the nasty mess cleaned up in the living room, the carpet is actually soft again and the stink is gone at least for now. it smells like the carpet cleaner and lavendar pine sol. hope it lasts... it would be nice to save some $$ and not have to replace the flooring. other than that, it's quiet here. I wish it was nicer out. I didn't free range today, but made brown rice with kitten food, mixed in some feed and corn...I could see that all their crops were really full when I went out a moment ago to check for late eggs. Someday I will be able to retire (15+ years...) and then I can stay home all day and be the Crazy Chicken Lady that I so aspire to be!

19 Eggs - broke 1, fed it to Chester, so I picked another and fed it to Ruby.

MC, the turkettes are adorable! and pretty well feathered all things considered. temps in the 50's is fine if they're active... Peachy would bring Pebble out in the cold - he was hatched 3/8/13, so at about a week old, I offered the outdoors, and she took him right out. snow everywhere... he was happy and not always hiding under her fluff... temps in the 30's...

Oh well... one is better than none. I went to Big R today to inquire about chicks. The get shipments on Monday which is perfect for me to sneak littles under Rumples that night. When I tried to explain the whole timing thing with chicks to the girl that was helping me... she glazed over. And she did not know much about chickens. Hmmmmm....

Quote: Rumples is sitting on eggs. Fertile eggs. I only want to keep one Lav Ameraucana. The others I will sell, but I want more 2 more egg layers, so The day after Easter I plan to get 2 chicks to slip under her at night with the other chicks that she hatches. Maybe a BSL and RSL. They also have a few others. Ancona, Speckled Sussex, but I am not sure what breeds will be there on the 21st.
All is good with Rumples. Her eggs do not smell and she is setting like a champ. I don't dare try to take an egg to candle... she growls and screeches like a wild hyena. Scary.....

GRRRRRRRRRRR

George broke both eggs today.

One was kicked out of the box and trampled, despite the higher lip. The other she apparently played soccer with in the box frantically spinning around hiding from the girls, who just wanted in the box to lay.

Dang it, George, pick a different hiding spot!

Should I remove the original nest box that everyone seems to want to lay in, fight over and hide in and just leave two new ones in the hope that George will pick a different favorite hideyhole?

Should I put Psychochicken Hattie, who is the one George seems most scared of, off in the baby coop by herself for a couple of days?

This is frustrating.

Is Hattie picking on George??

Good to hear from you Lindz! I was wondering what had happened cause you were quite...I figured you were still getting over that sickness! Guess you were just having a busy weekend!

MC-those turkey's are just adorable! Makes me want to get them.

My big girls are ranging full time when I'm home. I'm not necessarily out with them but I do check on them periodically. No predator sightings to date except a hawk. But it's infrequent and they have a lot of cover. My feed is going much farther now which is delightful. I'd say out of 7 days they are outside from sunup to sundown for 4 of them and for the other 3 are out from about 4 on. I'm so thankful we don't have any stray dogs which seems to be the biggest daytime predator from what I can tell.
