Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Morning update!

6 outta 7 hatched. The last has an external pip so I think it's just a slow poke as we are still only on day 20.

I had to assist one. It had an external pip very early yesterday but never progressed to the zip stage. I started a small zip at around 2 am to just see if maybe it was just a bit cramped and couldn't get around. It didn't appear to be malpositioned cause the pip was where I expected it to be. I then left her alone for the rest of the night cause I knew it could breath. This morning after still no progress and the beak in the exact same position I zipped her totally (all blood vessels were dried so I felt comfortable). I just took off the cap and put it back. After about 10 min it pushed out. Alls ok!

The last one to hatch is my first yellow chick. All others are black so far.

it's completely fogged in up here. can't see anything... I haven't been out yet, but I'm on my way in a few minutes. I have to work a double today and stop at a friends house to care for kitty. they left for vacation at 4 this morning.

Squirt has hatched 2 and I saw a pip in the third. Sadly we had our 1st fatality. The fourth egg was crushed and half was missing. Not sure when it happened. It looked pretty well formed

All 7 from incubator 1 out!
So cute! Are they all Polish? Looks like some are more gray than black, so can you expect different colors from these? I know white crested black is common and buff laced. Wonder what else you might get.

Sorry about the crushed one. We've been lucky so far. No fatalities, only some that never pipped and I am not investigating further to find out why. I don't feel responsible

since the hens did the incubating! I candled at day 10 or 14 or something and took out any clears. Some had air cells in the small end of the egg, so not expecting perfect hatches anyway.

3 total so far under hen #2, and two eggs with no pips. I will give her until tomorrow morning at the latest, and then maybe put the eggs under a broody cochin to give them a little extra time. New colors with this batch- one light brown with yellow patches, one black, and a blonde chipmunk.

One of the chicks from the first hatch had a poopy butt this morning, so we soaked it off with warm water and gave it a blow dry. This is the same chick we think hatched from the egg that I accidentally took out of the nest and left on my counter overnight in the cold three days before hatching. Poor baby. I feel very responsible for this one!

We are calling it Fuzzy Wuzzy because the back of it's neck is sort of scruffy looking.

Squirt hatched the third and final.

I'm actually shocked as these were shipped eggs. So far all developed and only one accident. Now on to the last five!

W4W- yes they are all polish. And as they dry a couple are showing up as grey/silvery. I was hoping for some more buff so we'll have to see what comes outta the last ones.

Your babies are too cute!!!!!!

Lindz- did you solve the origin of your mystery chicks?

The wait is killing me! I think we still have atleast 4 to 6 weeks before our hens start to lay.

double routes went well, it rained in Gilboa and poured in Jefferson. I was soaked by the end of the day. anyway, I came home to 3 crushed eggs with fairly well formed but not fully developed chicks.

Broody Mama was sitting on them. she's a mess. dirty and smelly from the broken eggs. so I took her out, let her meander around a bit, she didn't go far, and she wasn't trying to get back in... cleaned up the mess and then cleaned her up. she's back with the Fosters for a day or two anyway... if she wants to brood again, I'll let her, I feel terrible. don't let eggs get wet. not a single one hatched. c'est la vie.

on a more positive note, I collected 23 beautiful eggs...
