Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Strange weather - all you folks way farther north saying it's hot, and here it has been in the 70's for two days in a row. Three summers ago we had something like 60 days of 100+ degree weather, with many days of 106, 107, etc., and humid, omg it was so bad. I was worried about having a typical summer this year and how the chickens would do, but so far only a few upper 90's days, no 100 yet. It's really so weird but nice.

Lindz, every boy needs a cast at some point for bragging rights! :)

Cheeka, love your pictures!

casts are cool when you're a kid... I remember, way back... in 1979

at sleep-away camp, on the last night, a bunch of us sneaked into the arts and crafts building and took plaster cast material, technically used for making masks... and we made casts. I made an awesome wrist/index finger cast - looked so real... to fool my family with... so who was my traveling companion on the little plane? a Nun.

who, of course... asked me what happened. either answer I give...

can't lie to a nun... so I told her it was a practical joke.

<~~ lecturing nun, I still went ahead with it and my family was shocked! they believed the whole story about how, because they were on the boat, ship to shore calls being complicated things back then... we couldn't get a hold of them to... blah blah blah, and so the day went on. then at dinner, I couldn't cut my meat so I took the cast off - my Mom flipped! so then the "joke" was revealed... it took quite a while to undo my fibs, but that cast was a fun toy for the rest of Autumn - mostly used by my little brother, finally, it was falling apart and smelled so terrible! ahhh childhood pranks...

I'm waiting for photos but Mylee learned how to ride a bike day before yesterday!! no training wheels! a neighbor's niece, Anastasia, was visiting who is a couple of months younger than Mylee, and way way tinier, and they were out playing... another child had been riding Mylee's bike and bent one of her training wheels, so Ana's uncle took it off to fix it, well... Mylee started riding with only one and she was doing great, so Andrew took the other wheel off and gave her one small push ~ off she went!!!! she didn't fall and she is now a bicycle riding champion! she only needed that one push, after that, she had her own ability to gain the momentum from a stop. I'm so proud of her! I was also 4 when my cousins taught me how to ride with no training wheels, and I do remember the day - it took me more than one helping hand to get the hang of it. Mylee is amazing! she starts Pre-K in a week - she can already spell her name, knows how to count to 30, has her abc's down pat, knows subtle colors as well as primary's... she's social, can be very girly-girl with her princess dresses and accessories but is also tough as nails, tomboy - afraid of no bug or critter - can keep up with the boys and straight up tells them they better not hurt her feelings!

5 so far today whew whoooo! I would say waiting on 6 but I'm to excited for 5, it's a new egg record for us! So instead of wishing for six I am going to send good egg laying vibes to Wilson so mortie can add to her total!

Awww, thanks JW. Penny (I assume) came through today but everyone else is just scratching around the run like braindead knuckleheads. Like they don't have the faintest idea that they are 20 weeks old and, at a minimum, Maggie and Wilson should at least be having vague thoughts of nest boxes and eggsongs. Today only Penny gets treats. We'll see how they like that.

Went to fleet farm and bought some scratch finally. The scratch I had before had dried fruit and whole sunflower seeds and peanuts and stuff in it. This is a regular 50 lb bag which doesn't have all that fancy stuff but I doubt the birds care. I was unable to follow through with me cruel plan to only give treats to penny though. As soon as I got home I sprinkled some in the run to give them something to do because they are usually grounded until late afternoon and tonight we will be at an event so no free range today. Penny's egg was 50 grams today! Her smallest one was 36 if I remember right. Movin on up!

One of my BA's was singing this afternoon, mind you she was out in the run, nowhere near the nest. They are 20 weeks, so they need to start earning their keep soon!
