Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

If it was 20 I would be less concerned. Real fee is -6 right now. Today the heated waterer had a crust of ice on it. Maybe I'll make eggs for breakfast tomorrow to see how they are.

So....anyone know how to tell if an egg has been frozen? I'm kinda scared to eat the eggs I'm getting right now. They feel like little ice cubes. It's not that I don't think they're safe to eat, just that I don't want to eat weird tasting eggs. Makes me wsh they would just stop laying until spring.

You candle them of course!

Don't we always candle the eggs every day?

I know, we are not supposed to...

The cracks will look like spider webs. Watch for seeping and of course keep the smell test going.

19° and feels like 3°...... I'm not liking the cold this early in the season! Most of the chickens are doing fine but I do have two that are molting very hard and they are really feeling the cold! They are only coming out of the coop to eat and drink then back in they go! Hubby and I covered up some drafts in the coop and I think we are going to put up some plastic this week. I'm still only getting 2-4 eggs per day. I hope the oldest pullets from this year start laying soon!

30 with a feel of 19! Wow it's down right balmy here compared to you guys. Wood stove has been going all day. It's so nice to feel the water pipes and they are stone cold!!! Yay! We have propane heat and it is super expensive.

Have gone outside to chip ice off water a couple of times. Sure hope someone gets me a heated water base for Christmas.

On the plus side Rawley is loving this weather. He just wants to be outside all the time!!!

15° here, real feel 6°, at least the wind died down significantly. it was downright nasty all day. but the sun was out and it "looked" nice, so I offered free range. everyone came out and just about everyone went back in just as quickly! the only ones to really range were Gossamer and all her babies. they visited all their regular spots despite the howling, very bitter wind. it was too much for me after about a half hour. fortunately, they are very easy to round up. water frozen all the way around except for one bucket in the dome that is in a fitted hole.

hope it's just a cold snap and that winter hasn't gotten a grip on us already!

No eggs again yesterday. :p Tuesday night we pulled into a TA in WV. I ordered tea. The teapot was dirty, but I assumed that the waitress had sloshed some, and let it sit a minute before bringing it to me. Then I took a drink and discovered ketchup or something all over the lip of the mug. Coffee yesterday morning was more stuff on the lip of my cup. I am in a Denny's in Indiana. I drank my coffee and discovered lemon seeds clumped against the side of the inside of my cup. As my dh just said, what happened to the days of that kind of thing meaning a free meal? I don't even get my coffee free!!

1 egg yesterday. It is cold, but the heat lamp out in the covered part of the pen helps keep the water from freezing too much. I do not see the chickens much. It is dark when I get home from work. It's making me grumpy.
