Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

oh yeah! double digit day! of the 3 in the pic below, the pointier green is Merida's, the rounder blue/green is Elinor's and the brown is a mystery. all 3 (Portia, Thelma and Louise) were all in the nest this afternoon

plus 1 more egg from the Foster pen that I gave to Cressa, so she has 3. and I have 13 out of 14 - and that blue one in the favorite nest really is a super jumbo, I'll weigh it later!

(she's eatin' peaches. now this is what she's been waiting for... all the hand fed goodies that she watched her Mama get...)
communal nesting

Flo. you cannot come in the house. period. and why not? she asks...

that's why.

oh...well... yeah, okay

and the polar opposite... later, Flo was over here, wiping her feet in a puddle

Flo. She's the friendly type who'll come over and walk on your shoes, huh?

there are exceptions to that losing chicks deal... Peach hatched a bunch of eggs for a friend of mine who would not wait for her to raise them a bit. from the moment the woman took the chicks away and for 3 solid days after, Peach did nothing but pace and chirrup for her babies. it was awful. it was May and essentially, no chicks to be had until I stumbled on someone who had 3 week old chicks. she gave me 3. Peach was instantly gratified. pecked them all on their heads, called them to follow and went on with life.

Awwwww....how sad is that.....but I'm glad you were able to find some for her. sounds like she's a natural mommy chickie

Mortie.... if you want her to hatch some eggs, I would separate her from the flock. I failed to separate Rumples from the flock while she was broody and that is how she became crippled. The other hens sat on her to lay eggs even though there were 3 other nests open.

Jazlyn is back. She is 8 mos. today, and in the past two days she has gone from kinda crawling (she went a pace or two) to a pro. And... She has croup. I will have the pleasure of making sure she's breathing until Friday night. Good thing I've "been there, done that ".
I started a sourdough starter lastnight. Then I spent three hours researching sourdough starters. I was up until after one. I'm confident now that people vary on their procedures as much as people vary on making fermented feed.

MC, can I be nosy and ask why you are babysitting so much for your lovely little niece? Croup is scary. My youngest had that with bronchitis and viral induced asthma at the same time. He was about 18 months.

My mom caught a wild sourdough yeast and kept it going in the fridge for something like 15 years. I remember her feeding it. Just what we needed, another pet!
