Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

My vote is Cody. Surprise is an option too! Ha ha!
I'll be keeping my chickens.
The broody was off the nest yesterday, and seemed broken. I took eleven eggs (10 warmish and one just laid) and left them outside. I had seen her out today, so when I went out an hour ago, I flung the eggs into the yard, breaking two. Then I walk into the pen to find... Yeah. You guessed it! I reached in, expecting to get pecked. Instead she screamed, and ran outside. Three eggs. That means four between yesterday and today.

Where are all my eggs? I was getting 5/day before she went broody. And is it worth putting her in a broody pen?

When they're going broody and building the clutch, they will lay an egg a day (or so) before they start sitting, around 10 eggs or so. It's all regulated by hormones. Hard to know where in the cycle she is. If she was leaving the nest, it may be that she wasn't at the sitting stage yet or she's too young and hormones are not taking her through the whole cycle. I've had some that only went partly broody, they never sat for more than a week or two and even that was erratic. I think it has just been bred out of some. A true broody you can't PRY off the nest. Moving into the shorter days, it might be better to wait until spring to try hatching. You will have all the work if she abandons them. OR... Do you have an incubator?

I get whooped and sore pretty easily, but still spent all day outside with the flock. out at 9 this morning, with a small break at the hottest part of the day... tricked them with a little Pie for lunch at 1:30 and we were back out from 3-6. I'll sleep great tonight!

Neffy's wing... as she relaxes in my lap. she's glittered - she has light green and pink and purple and blue... hard to capture, but captivating to look at.

MC, it's a little late in the season for brooding outside now. they won't hatch til mid October... frosts regularly... I'm glad mine finished earlier this year than last year. last year was the last day of September for the final hatch. up to you if you want to let her, but you've just tossed her clutch. once she commits, she'll likely sit to the end...

I can see the colors! She's such a sweetie sitting in your lap. Feathers are really interesting. A lot of the color comes from the structural features. Blue jay aren't really blue. No pigment!
