Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Only getting two eggs yesterday was a good thing! Two hands, two eggs! She hasn't collected eggs in a while because the turkey pen (where the chickens were for the last few months) wasn't clean enough. She would have been picking up poop.

Not to mention all the holes the chickens dug.
Anyway! She has improved her walking skills, and understands "get the eggs" now so it went really well! The first trip was before any eggs, but the second trip... "Egg! Egg! Egg! Egg!"

She was eggcited to say the least!

Look at that reach! Such a pro! She doesn't even have to look at what she's doing!

Look at her go! Adorable. Love how she traded hands with the first egg to reach in. Very professional.
Egg! Egg! Egg! Egg!

How old is she now?

she is so beautiful and full of joy for the simple act of finding eggs - makes me miss Mylee... who will turn 6 in 3 days. I sent her a neat-o hot wheels recumbent bike and a pair of very colorful pants to wear with her pink cowgirl boots... she got the bike early, so she's riding it already... she'll get the pants today, because it's show and tell day, and her item has to be something that starts with the first letter of her first name. so she has a piece of mail. addressed to her, inside are her new pants. another M... for multicolored. she doesn't know what's inside the envelope yet... bet she wants to change her clothes at school....

I thought the same thing! A Mylee in training! Is the plan for your friend to come live with you still under consideration? You need to take a trip west.

I like the teacher's assignment, but it's a good thing her name isn't Xena.

I'd have send her Brutus's tiny xylophone... last week it was the first letter of her last name, she brought in a Round Red ball with a Rabbit face on it. she got kudos from her teacher for using 3 R's

I don't think I made the calendar even though I made the top 30 and got the announcement a week early, I double checked the pixels, and I'm a tiny bit short, not that they couldn't put a border on it... but they winners are getting their messages and I didn't get one. it's cool... next year!

Hello all, little update!

We now think the puppy is a girl and she is very cute! She is teething at the moment.

When I went to shut the coop tonight I saw drops of blood. And as I'm sure every chicken owner knows that is your worst nightmare. I saw it under Monica's perch but not where from. She is very close to starting laying so as I was going to the back of the coop to pick her up and get a better look I was really hoping it wasn't a predator attack or a problem while laying. Luckily, it was just her foot, which is a lot more mendable. One of her large foot feathers must have gotten caught on something and had been pulled out which meant it was bleeding quite profusely.

Babs after her broken toes doesn't like perching all the time and Selma usually joins her in the nesting box to keep her company. But once I picked Monica up to clean her foot (which she was not pleased about, haha, silly girl!) and put her back on the perch. She settled without discomfort and Babs and Selma immediately jumped onto the perch next to her and cuddle her. It really warmed my heart.

On that note when I picked Monica up, I noticed that she's gotten quite heavy and wide and looks really close to laying! I think she'll be quite the fluffy cuddle bug once she's gotten over herself and settles into the routine here and realises that I would never hurt her.

Hi everyone! So, I have an easter egger who is about 25 weeks old. When should I be expecting eggs? Also, my rhode island red has layed an egg a day for 4 days in a row. Is that normal? She has only been laying a few weeks.

Min, the pup is very cute. Have you named her yet?
What a relief that Monica's probelm was an easy fix.

I still have a sick little Serama that is not getting better. I am thinking of putting her out of her misery, but I'm such a wimp about it. We'll see how she's doing tomorrow.

We are still not 100% on the gender by probably Dexter or Max for a boy and Luna for a girl.

I was so relieved it was an easy fix for Monica, she must have caught it on something while she was free ranging before bed. It was bleeding quite a bit when I found her so it must have been quite recent. I'm sure she'll be jumping on top of the garden chairs in no time!

Hi. When they start laying is very much an individual thing. Chicks hatched late winter early spring usually lay sooner since they have the advantage of more sunlight from lengthening days. Pullets maturing into fall and winter sometimes take a little longer because they are getting less light stimulus as they get older. A good way to tell they are getting close is by the redness of combs and faces. The more red the better. A couple of mine also got mean and grumpy as the big day approached. If you see her checking out the nest boxes, you can start looking for eggs in about a week.

As for the RIR, they are bred for laying, and 4 days in a row is not unusual. Good she is there to give the EE some pointers!
