Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

I'm thinking about raising crickets...

I have had one of those nasty Jerusalem crickets in a container since I found it in the house

a couple of days ago. Been feeding it and it's getting bigger. Thought about trying to raise them, and low and behold, another one, much smaller, came tromping across the floor last night

. (I don't know where they are coming from.

) Put the small one in with the big one.... let the breeding commence! This morning, the only sign of of the small one was one back leg.

Did not know they were carnivorous cannibals! Now I'm scared.

no more eggs since yesterday animallover?

I got 5 out of 6 today, Isis is still holding out, 3 medium, 1 small, and 1 peewee...

Violet...
I have a divider for the nest box, but they don't seem to like it... this way, more girls can squeeze in at once...

Is the largest egg in that picture actually a mossy looking green color? What on earth laid that??? Such a cool color!!! Actually, you know what? Nevermind, don't tell me. I can't have any more chickenssssss.

Hi CluckyCharms. That egg was from one of Cheeka's EEs. Don't know if it is that color or just the camera.

Check out the main thread for Olive Eggers (OE) or google some images. Really cool.

Hi Lilwanis  :frow   Glad you posted. It got Ruby laying!  Maybe she was afraid of public embarrassment. Roger has no shame, but I think there are some chickens who care about their reputations!

I've seen you on the EE bragger's thread and definitely agree with you about the EEs (Cheeka will too).  I only have one now, but had a few about 25 years ago and loved them then. The next time I have room for more chickens, EEs will be at the top of a very long list.

Animallover, do you provide the crickets?  We have lots of earwigs and the occasional Jerusalem cricket :sick that I'm so happy to have devoured by the mob. Now I just need to train them to catch mosquitoes and flies!  After that, they need to learn how to clean the coop. :D

Ha!  As soon as I posted I saw you answered my question! Can you read minds?

Yep, I lurk and occasionally post there too ;) Even my DH likes the EE's. They were sitting on his lap just now.

Hi Lilwanis! glad to see you here, and you do know that it was all about the post that got the one to lay... they all have wireless in their coops... they know when we talk about them!

CluckyCharms, yes, that is a mossy green egg, or olive egg... laid by my wonderful EE, named Blu... almost thought about changing her name to Olive once I saw the color she laid, but she's still Blu... my other EE, Isis, lays a lovely bright blue-green egg... go figure...!
I'm with W4W on the resistance thingy... it's futile... so when you can hold out no longer, check out the Easter Eggers. they are my favorites by far! I do like the heritage breeds, but there is something about the hawkish look of EE's, I like big heads, big fluffy cheek muffs and beards... it's getting closer and closer to the day when my 15 chicks will arrive, all EE pullets! (I hope!)

well, the good times can only last so long. he's gone, and so are the Muck Boots... BH!

3 eggs today, one RIR, one BR, and Blu's lovely Olive Egg...
