Should I COOK her? Need your thoughts.......

Happy New Year chicken friends Well, here's the latest update on Rhodee. I've had her separated for the last few weeks and not one egg! She is definitely NOT laying yet! It is so strange! I gave her almost 5 weeks now and she will turn 1 YEAR OLD on Jan 22nd. She goes in the nest and goes through the motions but then comes out without laying. UGH! I put her back in with the others. So, what now???? I give up!

I think I need to find her a good home. I notice one thing different about her from the other girls...she is noticeably heavier when you pick her up! She's a full figured gal...LOL! The girls that are laying are lighter than she is ...... weird?

That's my thought, too. But it seems like if that was the case, she'd be getting ill, by now, wouldn't she? Can a hen be an internal layer for a long time? I've never had that happen, so I don't know much about it.

The parts that make me wonder, I made bold italic.

Well, now you absolutely know for sure she not laying.

If you don't have a problem feeding one non-producer, you might just let her be a pet, or, like you said, find her a home. Buy if she goes to a new home, you might want to let them know she may be an internal layer, so if she dies of it, they won't be too surprised.

well..i think she can last a good while being an internal layer....because its differant than being egg bound....there was a thread on here a while back about it.....it just seems SO odd that she goes in the nest and does the motions and everything....poor thing!..

Thanks everyone for your feedback! Yep, Rhodee is definitely my mystery hen. I don't think she is ever going to layer. I've heard of late bloomers but she is almost ONE YEAR OLD! I don't think she is an internal layer as she is very healthy and eat well and everything...see the pic I have back at the beginning of the thread. She is also soft underneath. It is just so strange to me. Plus the fact that she continues to go through the motions of wanting to lay and even does the bawk bawk song.

Anyone want a nice plump, healthy hen that DOESN'T lay eggs? I really don't want to keep her if she is not going to give me eggs...sorry if that sounds mean but I need the production.

Well, if I were closer, I'd definitely take her! She could be buddies with my Buff O that is the same way. She is not a year yet (about 10 months) but not laying. Her crop is still small and slighly pink. She is perfectly healthy too...soft belly, eats well, drinks, plays...just hasn't matured it seems.

Good luck trying to find her a home. I've been following this thread since the beginning
