Should I do this?

It's funny that you have written this is in the fashion that you have. I came back to check on this thread to see if anyone had acknowledged some, or any of these thoughts and it saddens me that there is no outward evidence of such. I've never been the type to see the world through rose colored glasses or anything, but this unidirectional conversation leads me to believe maybe I (and apparently you) see a little more rose color than most. Best of luck to the OP in this endeavor, I do not foresee it turning out well for anyone.

I have bamboo that over 30' tall, and about 2" in diameter. I think the larger stuff grows even taller....Off to Google.

I bet that would work better for him then...
While you are googling

... how long does it take to grow a decent height that would help him out??

All I know is the Chinese planted it under POW's to make them talk faster.

There's a species called Moso, which is the best temperate bamboo in the world. It is excellent for the Southeast US...It grows to about 100' in about 4 months and gets 8" in dia.

It is a major source of bamboo flooring, timber, furniture and paper. So, not only could he have a free, fast growing screen, which is beautiful, but a good cash crop, as well.

Yeah, Build that Fence quick!

In your place, I'd probably fight with myself a bit over my reasons... but one thing I thought of that would win that fight is the orchard.

Didn't we just have a thread about someone who was having their whole harvest stolen from their trees? People even tromping in with ladders and boxes? I could just imagine that, with a huge community a short hop over the fence. Could be kids or adults that did it, and once there are more houses there, it would be hard to find out who did it

So I'd definitely build a fence on that really sound reason, and not worry about my reasons anymore.

I was thinking... I don't know the costs for this type of thing at all... but what about... a cinderblock foundation for the fence.. like 2 or 3 or 4 blocks high... then an 8 ft wooden fence up on that... then at the top you could go back and add some lattice work.. and grow something up the fence.
I've always fancied growing things up fences.
I don't know about your climate for it.. it needs a lack of frosts... but one of my all-time favorite plants is Bougainvillea.
It grows as a vine, can be trained into a bush, or a tree. Its great for fencework because it grows fast in warm conditions with a little extra water.
We have a plant at the fron of our house that I planted last year as a 2 ft bush nearly dead from being root bound in the pot too long... and now at the end of this season, it's grown on the front of the house up over the top of a window.

Biggest plus... Thorns! They have long curved thorns that would be impossible for a climber to deal with... AND they are really pretty.. the flowers that cover it are actually bracts of colored leaves..

If the fence Still isen't tall enough from the view from their windows.... then some trees artfully arranged on your side of the fence.... right in front of each of those windows. Those windows staring at me would really creep me out too

also make the fence super ugly. make it with razor wire and cinder bloks so it looks like the nazis made it. dont let them ruin your homestead!!!

I hate people watching me too

Dont most people?? I dont see anything wrong with wanting to protect your privacy in your own yard...

Just a side note on the Bamboo...It draws people like a magnet.

We work at a bed and breakfast with a large bamboo wall growing behind it. The neighbors planted it because guests aggravated them. People of all ages don't seem to be able to leave it alone. People are fascinated by it.

I am the one that had people come and "help" pick all of our persimmons, not that I like persimmons but we had cut the trees back so I had only a few days worth of time it would take to pick them all rather than a month long project.

Our fence is only 4' and living in town with new neighbors that were NOT the ones picking, it was people we had given away persimmons to in the past. But we are going to add some friendly no picking signs and fat locks on the gates. Not that it will probably stop the people who have not clue anyway.

Not sure I would go with bamboo, some kinds can make kudzu look like and hard to grow and easy to contain vine, so pick carefully.

Moms neighbors just bought some expensive clumping bamboo, not sure the variety but it grows to wide and dark stalks. They discovered that when a certain tree came down on the top of the hill, you can see right in to their bedroom. Now their bedroom is a few hundred feet away and it is a small road, but they still feel on display. They are going to plant that $$ bamboo so it screens them. I hope that they plant it so it only gets high enough to screen and not tall like a telephone pole, be cause it is a beautiful view of the sun rise in the spot the old tree was in. And it lightens the whole road, that does not have street lights. Guess we will see.

But I would hate to see you go to the expense of such a large and engineered wall when you could find some kind of local tree that would do the trick.
