Should I keep a frizzle Pekin Bantam on sand to avoid feather soiling?

I just got two Pekin Bantams and one is a frizzle. My dad recommended keeping them on sand instead of sawdust as their poop will be less likely to stick to their feathers. Any ideas? And would children's sand be fine? it's considerably cheaper than proper sand bedding. :)

I don't know where this sand idea came from, but it seems to be somewhat popular. I would never keep chickens on sand. It would turn to a mucky mess, and when it's hot it burns their feet.

I'm going to have them in a covered, weather proof run so I don't think it'll be a problem.
I also live in the UK and we're not known for our sunny climate  but apart from that, do you think it could theoretically help? :)
