I have said many times that we should require a license for someone to have a child. Unfortunately, a license to reproduce would not guarantee good parenting anymore than a license to own a pet guarantees the pet will be well cared for. As a teacher, I see kids all the time who have no one at home to care for them. I have had students who called me dad because they did not have a dad at home or did not feel they had a relationship with their dad. I have seen students who were abused or molested or neglected. We all know people who were ruined by being reared by someone who never should have had children. Those are all very sad situations, but a license would not remedy them. There are people who have children knowing they cannot afford them,s o they children are neglected or are supported by someone else. It is not fair that I do not have children because I do not believe I can financially give them what they deserve, yet my tax dollars pay for other people to have children they cannot afford. People SHOULD have to prove they can afford to support a child independently without government aid before they can reproduce.
What we need is for society to be more responsible. Yes, some people deserve to be sterilized. There was a time when those with mental disabilities were sterilized. As sad as that might sound, it is much sadder to see them come to a parent meeting for their own challenged offspring. Some people need intervention to help them make good, sound decisions. Others are capable of working and making responsible choices, yet they choose to do the opposite. There should be agencies who can step in and help when those situations arise. Those on welfare should be encouraged not to reproduce by requiring they be sterilized or on birth control. Those metally incapable of making a responsible choice about having children should be prevented from having them. Those who mistreat children should have theirs taken away and be sterilized so they cannot have more.
I guess those views make me sound very socialist or very mean, but I just know how sad that some of the situations I have seen children in are. No one should have to be born into the situations a lot of kids are born into, and if we can prevent that, we should.
