Should we be worried about a cat?

Here is a chicken that thinks it's a dog

When I first had chickens, I was terrified of the neighbor's cats getting anywhere near them. Now, I don't worry so much. If they are small bantams, or younger chicks, they are definitely a threat, but I don't think they're a threat to a full grown large fowl hen or rooster.

I do chase them out of the yard if I'm outside and I happen to see them. One neighbor has a smaller black and white cat that is always hanging around, and she's quite harmless.

I would just keep an eye out,

Can't use a pellet gun in town??? What kind of town do you live in? I've always heard that full grown chickens can whip up on a cat, but probably depends on the cat.

In my town, (and i live 30 minutes from the city... this is not some congested city town...) in New Hampshire, it is illegal to shoot a cat, even with a pellet gun. My next door neighbor has had over 20 cats at any given time, though I think she is down to 7 or 8 at the moment. Lovely neighbor in general, just has a lot of darn cats. Due to them using our gardens as litter boxes etc, I have another neighbor who has taken to shooting them in the butt with a pellet gun. Needless to say, the police were knocking on my door and investigating not too long ago. If they can prove who did it, there will be arrests made. The police said the reason for this is not just animal cruelty, but because the vet bills are costing the neighbors lots of money.

I am not looking to debate who is right or wrong...obviously I feel that I, and my neighbor(s) have a right to protect our properties, gardens and animals from predators, in this case, domestic cats. And obviously I feel its the neighbors responsiblity to control her cats and keep them on her property or deal with the consequences (ie. vet bills and injured cats)... Doesn't really matter what the heck I feel though, when a police officer is standing on my porch telling me I can get arrested for shooting a neighbors kitty, on MY property... I'm probably not gonna shoot the darn cats..

Now I haven't had a problem recently with her cats, and I don't now if I'd have the heart to ever do it

but it might work for some: Trap the kitty in a havaheart and drop it (properly) at the humane society or relocate somewhere faaaar away.

A few people I knew had cats come and bite the heads off chickens on large fowl adult birds (they've seen this).
I have never had it happened, but I know enough people that this happens to, it makes me leery.

And I've had cats carry off chicks and pet turtles, pester caged birds (think canary) and chase birds around.

My property, my animals, I protect.
You cat on my property causing harm = trap and to the pound.
Just because it's someone's domestic animal/pet don't mean you should allow it to kill your birds.

I'm sad that Animal Control is worried over the cost of veterinary fees to the owner, but doesn't seem to care the harm it causes to other people's property (which still costs money to save a bird or clean up poop or get medication if the cat poop has bacteria!)

Usually a good chicken-friendly, cat-disliking pup will do the job

hopefully puppy does not get a hold of kittie
