It was raining today, so I decided to go into town and look for a replacement air compressor or parts to fix my old one. Besides my Air Locker nail puncher, I have a 18 gauge brad nailer/staple gun I got from Harbor Freight last winter and have not had a chance to use it yet. Also, I am tearing apart lawn mowers and need the air attachment to blow off the machines and carburetors.
The cheapest replacement air compressor of the same size as my old one was just over $150.00. I was thinking maybe $60.00, but then again it has been over 20 years since I bought my air compressors. Well, I did not to spend $150.00 on a new air compressor, so I went store hopping looking for repair parts for the old compressor.
Menards had what I needed. I bought their less expensive pressure regulator for $5.99.
I was able to take all the other parts off the old regulator assembly and reuse them with this new pressure gauge. I put everything back together, filled the tank with air, no leaks anywhere, and the pressure gauge works really nice. Depending on the weather tomorrow, I will give it a working test out with some of my air tools. But, for now, I'm really happy with my $6.00 fix.
One of my new items on my pallet project list is building some tomato cages out of pallet wood pieces. I plan on using the air staple gun for that project, which is one of the reasons why I wanted to get my old air compressor back in operation. Anyways, last year I bought a bunch of heavy wire tomato cages that looked really good. Unfortunately, they are breaking off at the welds/solder points and just falling apart. I'm very disappointed with them. So, this year, I think I will try and build some tomato cages out of scrap wood and see how that goes.
Here is a picture of what I currently have in mind...
If anyone has already made tomato cages out of new wood, pallet wood, or reclaimed wood, and has any lessons learned, I'm asking for your experience in what works and what does not. Thanks.
