UPDATE on my planter(s) build for Dear Wife.

View attachment 3212252

As I said in an earlier post, my first attempt was the middle 24X24 inch planter, which was deemed too big. My second attempt, on the left, was the 16X16 inch planter, that was judged too small. My third attempt, on the right, is a 12X24 planter and I surely hope it hits the Goldilocks' zone and is just right for Dear Wife! I'll find out when she gets home from work today. Wish me luck! :fl

Let me add, that I have learned something on every one of these pallet builds. Nothing like experience to improve your production. My last planter was more square from the start, required less custom cuts to finish the fit, and it went together much faster because I am learning how to cut the boards more efficiently.

Although I am very happy with this planter design, I think I will be trying out a few other designs I have seen on YouTube. One of my ideas is having the planks mounted on the inside of the 2X4 frame. Since a 2X4 is 3 1/2 inches wide, that would give me about 7 inches of play when mounting the planks on the inside. That would mean I doubt if I would ever have to custom cut or taper that final board for the sides. I would just take up any difference(s) with the overlap on the inside 2X4.

Something like this google picture...

Your planters are lovely! Thanks for adding the pic of future plans too...that looks so doable...my future project list just grew!

I started working on my next pallet project this afternoon. I will be making 1 or 2 pallet raised beds for food gardening. I broke down a few pallet this afternoon and have most of the wood standing by for the project. Just trying to decide on what design I want to use for the build.

I could continue the planter design, and just make that bigger (4X4 feet), or I could make it like my galvanized steel panel raised bed design, just using pallet wood instead of the steel panel.

Here is a picture of my galvanized steel panel raised beds....

I already have 4 of those steel panel raised beds in the backyard, and I could make the same design only using the pallet wood instead of the steel panel. I still have some leftover 4X4 posts for the corners. If I kept that steel panel design, then my pallet raised beds would have the same general look and size of the existing raised beds. I don't know if that is a plus or not. Maybe some of you with better sense of aesthetics could clue me in on that.

If not, I'll just continue with my pallet planter design and upsize it to (4X4 feet), maybe without the top decorative boards.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks. Dear Wife approved my third attempt at the planter. Evidently, I hit the right size and shape. Today we went out and put the pallet planters around the house where she thinks she wants them. The pallet planters are still empty, so the idea is to give her some time seeing them in the yard to make sure that is where she wants them set. Once they get filled with potting soil, it will be much harder to move them.

We will be starting our pallet pig house likely this wk!!! I'll post pics as we get things done!

:thumbsup I'd love to see your pallet pig house pics.

Dear Wife is from the Philippines and she loves eating pork. I have tried to convince her that I should try to raise a pig or two, but she does not want anything to do with that idea.
Maybe a cute little pallet pig house would warm her heart to the idea? :idunno:smack

We had a stray pig show up at our door last thanksgiving...he was kinda cute, but boy I worked hard to find him a home 🤣. He tried to take over the tortoise house so he definitely liked the pallet build!

I like both the designs you're using on planters. Has your wife voiced a preference? I'm guessing her thoughts will be your deciding factor 😄

Crazy! A stray pig wonders onto your property? How does that even happen?

The food garden beds are pretty much left up to me. Dear Wife only cares about her flower gardens. Even so, I showed her the pictures and she thought I should go with the galvanized steel panel raised bed design I already have, and just use the pallet wood in place of the steel panel. That's the way I was leaning, too, so I think I'll just build them that way.
