I need DH to bring home some more pallets... SO much inspiration in this thread!

I put a new, heavy duty tarp over part of my run last week. (The light duty tarp held up remarkably well for a year!) But now I'm thinking a wood roof with pallet shingles would look pretty darn cool...

I use shower curtains as wind breaks around my run. They're pre-grommeted, and I attach them with zip ties to the fence. They've been used for 2 winters, and I bet I can get a third out of most of them.

That's a good suggestion. A shower curtain would be thicker than the plastic I was looking at. As long as it lets sunlight in, I think it would work great.

Yeah, those pallet shingles look pretty nice in the videos I linked. I have a stack of pallet wood already cut down to 16 inches which I think would make great shingles for a roof or walls of a pallet build.

Well, I only mean to use the pallet 2X4's for an A-Frame, not the whole pallet. And I only want the A-Frame for the winter months and then it will come down in the spring.

The idea kept me awake last night. I would definitely paint the boards first; white paint to brighten it up underneath and to lessen the warming in the summer. The frame of the run is the metal tubing from a green house or gazebo-style tent, about 1" diameter. So, sturdy enough to support the weight, but not sure I'd climb on it.

A shower curtain would be thicker than the plastic I was looking at. As long as it lets sunlight in, I think it would work great.

Eventually it gets a little brittle, and sharp edges will wear a hole in it, but yeah, for the cost (free, in my case, as I was replacing the shower curtain), it works very well. I lay the excess length on the ground and cover it with leaves so it won't flap in the wind.

I did find two more with metal grommets (as opposed to melted holes with no reinforcement) at the dollar store for $6 each. I bought both.

Here's more info on using the tarp. The frame of the run is metal tubing, and the pieces are 4' apart, so there's not a lot of load bearing strength there. I put chicken wire over the roof to help support the tarp, so it wouldn't sag with the snow load. I also broomed the snow off every time it snow an inch or more. That took about 3 minutes, so not a big deal. Our snow can be very wet and heavy.

Pull the tarp snug to help keep it from sagging, as chicken wire isn't very strong either. Also, you want to keep it from flapping in the wind.

Dang, I really do want to build a pallet shingle roof now.

Pull the tarp snug to help keep it from sagging, as chicken wire isn't very strong either. Also, you want to keep it from flapping in the wind.

We have it and will continue to put over hog panels for any future similar builds.

Never thought of taking pallets & making shingles .I have a pick up load of short pieces I was going to throw away.
