Got my new pallet wood hügelkultur raised bed planted with cherry tomatoes that I started in the house - on my pallet wood seed starting shelf - earlier this spring.

I like to use the square foot gardening system in my raised beds, but I was unsure of the spacing for cherry tomatoes. In the past, I have planted tomatoes one per 4 squares, so my 4X4 raised bed only had 4 tomato plants in them. But when I looked up cherry tomatoes, it said to plant them 1 per square foot. That sounds really cramped to me to have 16 tomato plants in a 4X4 bed. After some thought, I planted these cherry tomato plants 16 inches apart giving me 9 plants for this 4X4 raised bed.

In keeping with the low cost of this bed, I got that white twine for free from the Menards load out shack. I just staple it to the wood where I want and presto, the grid is done! I added the tomato cages later, so everything is done in that bed.

I had 4 cherry tomato plants leftover, so I planted them in one of my older 4X4 foot raised beds but spaced them out 1 plant per 4 squares. That should give me a good idea of what spacing works better for the cherry tomato plants. 4 or 9 plants per 4X4 foot bed.

FWIW, I really like the design of this new pallet wood raised bed and even more so now that it is filled with topsoil/compost and I have plants growing in it. It looks even better in real life than in this picture.

I decided to leave them whole, stand them on their sides and support them with t-posts. Why cut them up when they are already configured as fence panels? Much easier, and I don't care what it looks like. I just care that it works.

I didn't get them set up today, but at least I figured out what I'm going to do with them.

I have a fence I made outta pallets the same exact way!!! It's serving its purpose super well with the goats!! They've not escaped yet!!

I think I changed my mind about how I'm going to use the pallets. They're in pretty bad shape, lots of the boards are broken or cracked. And I kind of want it to look like I put some creativity into this fence project.

I'm thinking I'll disassemble with a circular saw, use the good ~2' sections to build a 2 foot tall, more or less, wooden fence, and then run 4 foot tall chicken wire above that. That'll make a 6 foot tall fence that should block chickens and deer (I hope).

I tried pulling some boards off this morning and they just pretty much cracked. Those darn spiral nails hang on tight!

I hate pulling pallets apart...
All of my builds I've uses full pallets....

I got a good deal on two 5# boxes of ring shank nails that will hold things together pretty well. I need to use them for something!

Another thing, if I just stand the pallets on edge, the fence would be 44" tall. I wouldn't be able to admire my garden unless I was close enough to look over the fence. With a 2' tall wooden base and chicken wire above I'll be able to see my garden better.

I am bummed bc I can't just look out and see my goatsm..but for goats the fence height is necessary lol

I just finished breaking down the pallets with my circular saw. Three 8' long, three 10' long and one 12' long. I got over 200 nail free "pickets" for my fence, from 20" to 30" long, with a couple dozen 16 inchers thrown in. I am truly tired.

I have one more 10 foot long pallet left, and it's made out of better lumber. Now, that one I may use whole on its side for the west fence. I have a lot of standard size pallets ( 40x44???) that I can also use on that side to make it all from intact pallets. I don't ever look at the garden from that side anyway. LOL

Thanks, guys. My pallet wood raised beds looked so good that Dear Wife took over 3 of them this morning! I guess that is the final stamp of approval when she is willing to put her plants in my raised garden beds.

Dear Wife got some Asian plants from a friend and planted some bitter melon, eggplant, and some other plant that I cannot pronounce in my raised beds. One of those raised beds is going to need a trellis, so I'm looking at various designs that I can make out of pallet wood - at least for the framing. Might want to use some kind of wire for the plants to crawl up on. Still open on those ideas.
