Show me your quail pens!!!

Pics
Setting up a colony quail pen for the winter. Otherwise it will be nearly impossible and costly to keep non-frozen water available for them.

Here is steps 1, 2 & 3

More to come as we get it finished.

I plan to attach chicken wire around the bottom 3' to 5' to keep them in. It's 10'x10' and 6' tall. Will I need to cover the top?

I can't wait to move the quail into it for the winter!

That looks wonderful, just like i have done mine. YES you need to cover the top, i did it with bigger fences. I have cover the bottom part with chicken net, or else they can actually run out from the wholes.

Okay, I figured I'd cover the top, was hoping everyone would say they can't pop up that high and I wouldn't need to.

I'm planning to buy a 150' roll of chicken wire, so also covering the top with it shouldn't be a problem. (Will chicken wire be a suitable cover, or will I need a softer netting?)

I've had some escapees act just like a harrier jet. Fly nearly vertical, and then level off to horizontal flight. So I would agree that a cover would be the safe way to go.

Great idea.

How many quail do you plan to have in there when done??

I have about 35 breeders now that I'll likely thin down. I also have 100 shipped eggs on the incubator. Even if I have a great hatch rate I expect I will have extra males for the freezer. So I'm figuring I'll have around 60 to 80 over the winter in the big pen... Which will be covered! :D

Great pen. Are you going to rat proof the floor?

It does have heavy rubber mats covering all but the the very center. I have more mats to cover the entire floor plus an extra foot around the entire pen, put I have to work at getting them out from under furniture that my kids have put on top of them in my garage.

That said in my many, many years I've only ever seen a wild rat once, it was about 20 years ago and over 200 miles away from here in a public aviary.

I also have four barn cats that keep our place pretty rodent free.
