Show me your quail pens!!!

Pics
can you buy a small critter cage from a co-op feed store an have it work for a pet inside quail??

thanks

You could but whats the point of keeping one quail there not really pretty and you wont get many eggs from one. also i would just build a pen and keep a small flock if your gonna keep quail.

About the wire ,Hvac got it right there is a right side and a wrong side to wire you want the top wires going in the direction you want the egg to roll the bottom wires go perpendicular to those like side to side you don't want the side to side ones on top they will make egg rolling difficult . Dont know if I explained it clear but the picts show it done right. Nice set up by the way . The 1/2 x 1"
wire makes it easier for the doo to fall thru.

HVAC, nice pen but I have a question, How long have you been using it?

The reason I ask is, around here If I had an outdoor pen with "head out" feed or water

by morning I would have some headless birds. The predators will tear their heads off if

thats all they can pull out of the hole. I hope you have better luck.

I don't see why not. If I did that at my house I would have to make sure the quail could not put it's head through the bars of the cage or my dogs would kill the quail.

I was thinking the same thing. You might want to put a wire safety over the waterer so you don't end up with headless quail. Just an arch with the ends also covered will keep them safer. We are not the only predators that think quail taste good. Nice set up through!

I finally got pics of my quail cages. All of the cages are two feet deep and one foot high. There are two 4 foot long grow out/production cages on the right and four 2 foot long breeding cages on the left for 16 feet of cages for now. The shade cloth is raised up in the back for better ventilation. The tops of the cages are at shoulder height so I don't have to stoop to service cages and keeps the bottoms of the cages out of dog range to keep the quail from being pestered by my terriers. Since we have temps in excess of 115 degrees F in summer we will have misters to help cool the birds.

Cup waterers work great for quail. They learned to use them in less than a day. The cups are just high enough that they won't try to walk over them or kick dust and sand into them from their bath. Terracotta saucers full of water soak up water and let it evaporate in our single-digit humidity to help cool the birds. The quail love to bathe in the water too, something I didn't know they like to do!

On the hottest days there are often two or three quail standing, laying or playing in the pans of water.

The quail have baskets to hide in if they need a break from other quail, to lay eggs in or just to rest their feet from the wire. When the baskets get dirty I just hose them off or replace them.

Good point!
I have never had any predator problems, as my Lab, Border Collie mix protects all the little birds as if they were his own pack. Our chickens, ducks, and rabbits free range always, and I have never lost a single animal to a predator. However; the world has lost a few predators to my backyard farm guard dog.

You sound like me in that my 4 dogs and 4 cats have a kill zone for wild animals on my 3 acre area around the house. The squirrels don't even steal my walnuts. Every now and then I spot a brave/foolish bunny.

Nice setup! I'm going to have to try the terracotta pans of water since I'm in AZ too!

It works great for chickens too. Just make sure to get the unglazed kind so they can soak up the water. Glazed terracotta just gets hot in summer. I like the Italian terracotta, it lasts much longer than the type made in Mexico.
