I have 12 Japanese quail in this 6x12x6 cage. They are doing so good I'm thinking about adding 6 more.

@Fat Daddy When they get older they spend quite a bit of time on the perches. The chicks in there are 6 weeks old. They seem to be content to covey on the floor at this point. My other johnny house has 14 month old adults. They only go on the floor to feed.

We have a 6 meter long rung (around 40cm high) that they love and live in. To access the run we made little doors about once-ish every meter. We have been adding things in it like the silverbeet plant at the end (which they have nearly demolished in a few days). We just used avery mesh and a lot of tent pegs - looks great and worked very well for us as we don't have any real handyman skills

Our homemade run is attached to our bought hutch which has a built on run attached to the hutch as well. We have also built a makeshift cage over it to ensure they don't get/fly away when we are changing their water/food and cleaning.

I have a 16ft by 20ft out door aviary with a 4ft by 9ft in door heated building for quail I have 2 female Gorgia giant bob whites 9 Gorgia giant bob white males 1 white male cortinx 1 golden female cortinx and some birds

I just got a new aviary (dog run, quail proofed) and i want to put Bobwhite and Valley quail in it... What should the floor be? it rains 24/7 here so i need something that wont turn all muddy! (yes they will have a roof over at least 2/3s of it!!! my cots have gravel floor and it works well...

It appears many of you have the quail in cages with wire floors, versus on the ground. Is there a particular reason for this? I have (my first) 4 three-week-old Bob White quail (hatched by a chicken!) in a brooder. After being discouraged by BYC research/experience to house them with my chickens I am now dreaming of a high cage (to allow some flight) built ground-up around a bush of some kind to give them some natural habitat. What do I need to take into consideration for winter (central PA)? Do they need a "coop" for nighttime protection/shelter? I am going to put a roof on the cage.

On wire helps keep them safe from diseases and parasites. It protects from predators in one way but will allow an attack from underneath. So you need to take precautions against this as well by adding a layer about 8 inches under & along the sides. I would suggest some type of shelter.
