I can get shaving of any kind from the local lumber yard. Get a truck load dumped off for less then a hundred bucks. Think straw is the best best for now. They will more then likely be moved outside in about a month h in the new unit

I use straw... works great in all coops/pens.
composts fast and perfectly balances with chicken manure. I grew all my plants with that combination without adding any chems or fertilizers.

pretty smart with nutrients especially in states that are not legal. Here in Michigan it is legal and I do own a hydroponics store. I have kept quiet on that subject about that subject but could blown ur minds with pics. And knowledge. Everything I do is hydro no soil. It's like the comparison I think shubin said the old kinds were good but u can't keep up with the new kinds. I've done everything from fogponics, to hydroponics simple ebb n flow and even Dwc which is deep water culture and even recirculating deep water culture or even aeroponics. I've grown plants in water for well over ten years. Thought I would share. Lol. But for a garden good old manure works great. I like horse manure but don't have any horses. Lol
