I live in a rural town so I can't have many chickens and no roosters. I have tried many different breeds over the years and have had some success, some failure- but always fun. My favorites in the past were Alberta, the Buff Orpington ( she was VERY broody and BERY bossy) and Flora, the splash marans (see Avatar) who was a ham. I usually get my chicks from a reputable hatchery. I did go to a local hatchery and get a Mottled Oprington - Missy. She is hilarious. She vibrates when she fusses- and she fusses a lot. Her friend is Irene, the Buff Brahma. I also have Margaret - a Black Copper Marans. She turned out to be a cross beak and a blind eye, but is doing fine after a rocky start. She can eat and snack and drink water just fine - and lays the best little dark brown eggs. Opal is Margaret's hatchmate. She is a Splash Marans. Although she isn't particularly friendly, she is pretty and curious and is a good friend to Margaret. I know I can only keep a few, but resisting chicken math is hard. I rehomed Alberta, Flora and Irene and will probably rehome Opal. I plan to get babies this month and brood babies in the house before it gets too cold outside.

here's my Carrot who's currently making me really question her sex.
