Awesome! Glad you were able to use some pullets from the eggs I sent up to you, Kurtis.

Pullets turned out fine and I hope this new blood addition builds on that base.

Only thing I often get accused of is being too ruthless in my culling practice. Maybe try to practice a little more restraint this time?

I don't think anyone can be too ruthless in their culling.

Even if it means culling your only rooster, resulting in no breeding taking place at all?
Yeah, that was me.

Sorry to hear that. As you now know, you have to keep some..............

Last year, I had 8 hens that I thought were ok and the rest were not up to par. After a couple hits with predators and the old goose, I ended up with 5 but I culled ALL the roosters. NONE of them were worth keeping. I didn't find an acceptable rooster until late this spring. So, needless to say, I understand your predicament but just continuing to breed chickens that aren't up to par with others that aren't up to par didn't seem worth the effort to me.

Now, I say that and I have to clarify that my little hens are sweet and lay well so if you aren't interested in promoting the breed and only care about laying hens, well those birds would have been fine but I wanted more... So, I culled.

I have a nice rooster I posted a picture of back earlier and he is making some REALLY fine looking chicks. I can't wait to see what they look like when they are grown. I believe I have about 5 years of breeding before I finally get to the point that I've got the chickens where I will be proud of them and I assume I'll need to hatch a hundred or so each year to get 10 acceptable chickens... But since this is a hobby, why the heck now right?

She has some very good roosters. If they are anything like hers, you would never have any trouble selling the extras.
