on the project girl I'm still anxiously awaiting my girls to perform they are showing all the signs but taking their own sweet time getting started, sorta reminds me of my 18 year old niece LOLLY-GAGGING around waiting for someone to roll out the red carpet or something.

I ordered a postage scale this morning so that I can start weighing my chickens. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003ZJQ5RU
I
figured I would put them in a box or rubbermaid type container and weigh them.

I picked up and moved all the roosters to a separate pen last night and one of the ones that I thought was the best was significantly lighter than the others. I want to be able to know for sure.

So, here's a question. If you have a roo that is close to the right shape, but is under weight...is that a better option than one that is a better weight, but not quite as good shape?

That is a question that has been rolling in my mind, too - plus balancing body shape against WAY too much smut - what do you all think? Michael, I will be interested to know your weights.

Jeff- I keep thinking she is just bluffing me, or being a prima donna and deciding to rehearse for a long time, I think she is only 17 weeks old. How old are yours?

I have three project roos - deciding which to use is baffling me. They are practically identical - do we need to be looking at anything besides the best body type? Beak color? Leg color? I know we are the blind leading the blind with this, but I am thinking we need to document every breeding and see what we get. Descriptions and weights of hens and roos used and what the outcome is.
Or am I being too fussy?

Nice inexpensive scale. I think I need one too.

I would take the one with the proper shape/type first. It would depend how much underweight. The APA considers weight as a breed characteristic.
Pages 3-38 of the APA SOP are essential reading. 20% of the weight over or under is a DQ. They don't weigh chickens at a show, but most judges can tell if it is +/_.

No, haven't decided. Maybe we could get suggestions from others.

Anyone have any ideas what to call this strain of Delawares I am creating? (Hoping it is working!)

I didn't have that problem, Beth. I ended up with 1 male and 10 females. Thankfully, I really like my boy. He has great Delaware type, just wearing barred feathers.

I will work at getting picture of Petronius I, II and III and see what you all think. HA! Maybe I can get into more trouble with Walt and make him choose.

Timberline Delawares

You all probably have way more imagination than me -

I think my Projects are 6 mo. now if my remembering and math is up to snuff.

I would go for body type first, too. On these projects, this is going to be a long row to hoe so to say, we all should have plenty of time to prime and paint the barn once we get the foundation poured and the walls and roofs up. I've got an idea on the mixing of the paint that I want to try, which will be later on. I've just got too much going on right at this instant. Heck I still got to get my F2's first, but I got some future plans also to experiment with too.

Yeah on the ratio of pullets to cockerels. I ended up with 12 boys and 10 gals. I've culled down to 6 boys and to tell you the truth I hope I didn't get rid of a good one or two when I culled because the # 6 in this bunch is now looking better than my # 2 and 3. I'm going to keep 2 of the 6, I still have my #1 for sure and its looking like #6 will be my # 2 so far. I got to send Tacey a rooster this fall when the temps get a little cooler here and my brother(biomistake) will probly get a trio or so from me when he comes to visit this fall as his Projects and a whole passel of his flock got wiped out by predator/s of some sort, he's just sick over it so I'll give him some to fiddle with along beside us and we'll still have enough to go around for all

Which would leave me with just 2 left-over and they will surely make great Thanksgiving and Christmas meals here for us at the holiday season, most here prefer chicken to turkey anyhow.

A name? well they are Projects from Missouri =Promos, just kidding but you asked.

I have no clue as to what would be a good and proper name for these new kids on the block.
