Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

Been following this thread trying to learn all I can about the Dels.....they are so gorgeous

....thought I was starting to see what a good del's coloring would be when along came kathyinmo's pix of that awesome roo

that is barred. Now I'm confused.....is he a del.....a barred one? or another breed. My eye for sorting out the different breeds is still in the making.

Beth,
Funny you say that, and it reminded me of George at a younger age. I was like.......... oh, crap, he is not gonna be any good. Suddenly, he blossomed. Ask Jeff! I wrote to Jeff and asked him to save me a couple boys because I was not confident mine would be suitable. Just gotta wait it out!

George is the F1 of my project to create a new strain of Delawares. He is the result of a Barred Rock x New Hampshire. He was mated with his female hatchmates, to create the F2s. I have F2 chicks that should result in Delaware males and another pattern (Silver Columbian) female. I will mate them to (hopefully) create the F3s which should be 100% Delawares.

Some pictures are here........

on the same bird, CONSISTENTLY, along with the full front line (I hate those cut away chest areas I see in some Delawares)! These are from the same hatch. And, you can see Floozy's daughter has the pale legs, too.

Poor Oliver is molting and having to deal with all these new pullets besides his whiny molting hens, too. Poor guy.

I will be culling pullets this next week or so. I imagine I will only be keeping 4 or 5 for breeding experimentation.

This is the Delaware shape I want in my males. This is George, and he is larger than Oliver. I really like this rooster. He will be the father of my Delaware flock of the future.

George does look good. I haven't decided whether or not I like the name though. Also, your boxes came in today. Give me a shout when you have a chance.

kathyinmo, thanks for the info. Fascinating subject. Guess I need to find some.....or one....book (introductory level) on chicken genetics. Any recommendations?

Here's one of the by-products of my blue tailed del project. I have a bunch of these, but fortunately found somebody to take most of the roos. I had planned on putting them in MY freezer, but couldn't find a processor in the state.

They are so sweet. Maybe today I can get some shots of the girls.....
Nah- the girls were too dirty. Here's one of the little roos. Cannot wait til he gets a tail. So far no black on him- all blue. His brother from the same hatch is normal del colored.

I can paint the barn now? WOOOO HOOOO ! ! ! I was hoping you would approve. George is the F1 sire. I have hatched a few F2s and am waiting to see what I have. As expected, most were black and-or barred. I have a few yellow chicks though, and just have to wait to see how they turn out. I think it is gonna take more hatching though. If all goes as planned, the F3s should all be Dels.

Great improvements! Can't wait to see the next outcome.

Walt

Sounds as if someone is getting good marks on her tests and tuning, huh.
and I agree you are doing a fine job and those Delaware pullets are look like young ladies all gussied up awaiting their prom dates to arrive. I'm gonna be there right with ya one of these days.

George sure is a brawny looking dude. I hope at least 1 of my 6 turns out as good as he looks, mine still have a little more growing up to do to be able to compare them to him yet. They still have the lanky-leggy giraffe look going on now but look a lot better than a month or so back and I also saw my #1 pick practicing his moves on one of the older hens the other day but she didn't seem amused by his antics much less give him any recognition of his existence.
