Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

Hi Bea,

It's a shame that people in your area don't know about the breed. You would think they would make it the state bird or something, because of it's history. Good for you, bringing them back to their native area!

I've only had mine for a couple years, but love them.

Thank You Happy Mtn and Kathy for the warm welcomes. Yes I hope I'm not to late to get some NH chicks or eggs from Kathy or her fellow breeders this spring. Hint, hint.

A few of us are working together, to (hopefully) ensure that all who want them will have them available.

Be careful of what you say. I just may have to place an egg order.

You can sure do that!

I was excited today to get 8 eggs from one pen of 10 New Hamps, and 5 Del eggs from 6 hens. WOO HOO, hatching season beginning soon!

Thanks for the welcomes everyone. Yes Speckled Hen it is Janet Holtman's line I am working with. I just love them. I took some pictures of them today. I sat down on a concrete block to get some side shots. It was difficult because I had a hen on each knee and others trying to climb up too. I was shooting over their backs and somebody was squirming around under my legs. What a hoot they are! Not a shy girl in the bunch.

Barred Rocker what part of Delaware is your Mom near? It's such a small state. I'm in the area we call Lower Slower Delaware, Sussex County.

Kim the state bird actually is a Chicken but it is the Delaware Blue Hen which is a weird name cause they are little game chickens that were used for cock fights during the Revolutionary War. People keep them as curiosities. I was actually offered a pair of them but declined.

Kathy I'm glad your girls are laying well. Count me in for some NHs and Dels. I know the demand is great so I'll be very patient.

Does anybody have for sale, or know someone who has, hatching eggs from nice Delawares? I have a small flock of them, which I did get from hatching eggs last winter, don't know what bloodline but suspect hatchery--they are mighty poor representatives of the Delaware breed. And to add to that, my cock had to be put down (read: eaten
lol.png
) because he became completely lame and could not get up. And several of his siblings were quite aggressive birds. Adding all this together, I have decided to switch out this bloodline for a hopefully much better one. Was thinking about ordering from Sandhill, several people on BYC had good things to say about their Delawares, but I do not need or want 25 of them. I've had pretty good success with hatching eggs, so am willing to go that route. Kathyinmo?

I've been following you (lurking) on the heritage large fowl thread

, do you know any good ones out there, selling hatching eggs? Anybody? Sandhill is already booked out on them 'till the end of April, so I need to decide fast. Thanks.

Got a picture of my roo. & one of my pullets today, roo. is about 7 months & the pullet is about 6 months, thought about getting out of the Dellies, but I cant, I like em to much:

That is a nice looking pair from what I can see Rebel Yell. Decent tail and leg color on the pullet especially. The cockerel looks to have good color but can't tell about depth and width. They are certainly a good start for the future. Yes, Dels are sturdy, friendly and productive. Hard to get rid of them.
