Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

Cetawin - the DD is a teen. From what I understand, attempting a fib or two is part of the territory? And are you SURE 35 isn't too soon for the dating? Yeesh- I remember a creep or two in my life at that age- I am not sure you shouldn't keep her tied up under guard till at LEAST 40. . . .

The "adorable" ( ARGH!) Buckshot must be a Kira child- we have taken to shooting across the brooder the minute mom's arm appears and grabbing whatever we can, and pulling. Including trying for my glasses. Maybe he is just nearsighted. Maybe at 8 months he is getting roo-ish?

Cannonball may have been embarrassed rather than charmed by Thor's dance if he was stuck in the corner, like you said - or maybe she is just shy? Maybe she needs candlelight and yogurt for her first time? Or maybe she heard you threaten DD with 35 and thought you were talking to her?

Rustyswoman, YOU haven't been on the Marans/Meringue/Marands thread, have you? I certainly have not. I didn't even know it existed. (Is there a virtuous smilie with her nose in the air?)

I don't know what you're talking about...

Cetawin-- Yes we mamas of daughters can be a little ah....intimidating at times can't we. My only daughter had boys flock to her like bees to honey. I remember when she was 15 and two boys came to the door to give her a ride to church. It is a good thing I didn't have a sharp shiny object at the time but I guess that letting them know that she was not old enough to date, that they knew that, and that they had better get back in the car and out of there and not show their faces again for a long time.--It was enough.

And then when she could date I had to play a bit with that. I made a standing list of everyboy who called the house asking for her on the dry erase board and when they would call I would purposefully call them by the wrong name and say "oh is this Trevor (or Nick, or Matt....) and then "I will have her call you back when she gets back from her date."

The look on her face was priceless. Moot point she is married now and expecting my 2nd grandbaby. Who is coming today to have Grandma babysit so I won't be on much. He is a handful.

Kathy--how can Sandhill be sold out of Delawares? They lay eggs right? Odd.

I will be getting mine from mypetchicken.com. Ordering doesn't start until Feb 1st. I can't even make a list. I'm waiting on my sister too, she would like to add a couple more girls to her flock.

I will also be adding 2 each of Chanteclers and Sussex, 1 Marans, and 3 Silkies

I'm not sure where mypetchicken dropships from, but they do not breed birds that I'm aware of. You may want to ask where they're getting their Delawares; surely from one of the big hatcheries. My evil first Dels came from McMurray parents. Boy, I almost missed out on getting them because of those Vampires; glad Janet talked me into it! I know that Ideal's have lots of Columbian Rock influence, at least the ones I've seen at the feedstore as youngsters did.

Cynthia, a very nice person contacted me about Del eggs, and I directed them to you!

Get those babies out there!

Rustyswoman- oops!

I appreciate the reference, though, at the moment, I'm not getting the usual number of eggs from mine. Kira is molting and Maxie is a bit under the weather for some reason (possible heart problem) so Kira lays only 2-3 eggs a week and Maxie is not laying at all. So, it may be awhile before I can collect enough eggs to mail out.

Tell Gracie to get a move on- or is that a cross you wouldn't want to make?

I am going to ask here again first, because you are all so nice about my chicken idiocy. . . . Delaware bantams. They exist. HOW? How do you make a bantam of a breed? Specifically bantam Dels.
If I have a supersmall hen, and Superchick never gets any bigger, do they qualify as bantams, or would I have to prove that they breed babies of bantam size, lay a smaller egg, etc.? My little gimpy hen is just not growing. She eats like a piglet, but she is about 1/4 the size of my two biggest kidsl Superchick is still way behind in size also - I realize it may take both of them a year to catch up, but what if they don't?
Just curious. . . . .

mypetchicken's main office is here in CT but I believe their birds come from Iowa, I know it's the northcentral midwest. Does that make sense? Ideal is a long haul to CT and I don't want to order 25 birds. I don't have that kind of room....yet.

DH is already shaking his head at the plans for the new bantie coop! I'm looking forward to my Dellies!

I don't think you can breed bantams from a dwarf Delaware. Someone told me she was thinking that she read in her genetics book that if you breed two dwarves, then a lethal gene comes into play and causes them to die or not hatch, but I don't know. Superchick may just be a tad stunted and not a true dwarf, but no way to know for sure right now. It may become clear later on. Is his beak curved, legs short, or is he just smaller overall?

I already do that...I even called "Daniel" by the name of Jacob at the Winter Concert....walked right up and said "Hi Jacob...how's it going?"

How old is the grandbaby you are watching today? Mine is 5 and started kindergarten this year.

Sandhill and all the hatcheries use a mathematical calculation of how many they will have each year....they make sure they do not sell more than that number in a given time period. Pretty neat how they do it actually but it does lend itself to the ocassional shortages and postponing shipments because of it.

Joletabey...Cannonball is kinda shy and she is so sweet. She was more interested in watching to see if I was opening the door rather than handsome Thor dancing. Silly Dellie. Maybe she is using mind control on Thor?
