Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

Hi all,

Well the babies made the move today, from the insulated heated coop to the non-insulated open coop. It was just too darn hot for them. I've left the heated coop set up in case we get a cold snap. That way I can jut run out and swap them over. It was 97 degrees in their coop today with no airflow at all. After I took them out it had gone up to 102. Too hot for 5 week old chicks in North Carolina at this time of the year. They will be much happier now with all the air flow. A little chillier at night, but there are 14 little bodies to cuddle up.

I didn't mention it earlier, because it was painful, but we lost a little roo. It was a broken neck. My daughter found him stiff in the corner of the coop. We think there must have been some rooster shenanigans going on, he flew or ran to the corner of the coop and hit his head the wrong way. Freak things happen. And as only a breeder can look at things, I'm just glad that it was one of my culls. He had those off color greenish legs. Right now the count is 3 definite pullets, 3 definite roosters and 1 I'm just not sure yet. That one has a mixed tail, thick legs but no comb to speak of so signs of roo and pullet. If it's a rooster it's not a keeper. I'm hoping it's a masculine pullet, that's what my husband thinks.

Counting SawsAll that is 4 definite pullets to add to the Harem. Plus we have the unnamed Splash Orp pullet, Ivan and Pebbles (white Java pullets) and the unnamed Java pullets. Then we have my Java's. I'll be keeping one Roo from them. My daughter wants to keep one
Barred Rock roo...it's looking like we will only have one Hen there and three Roo's. LOL.

Now, for the funny. My daughter signed up for the 4H poultry sale and show! That means 10 New Hampshire Reds will be coming to MY house on May 15th for my daughter to take care of and nurse until the show in the fall when she will have to show and sell 3. Leaving 7 to live at my house. Does anyone else see a problem here? Now my 14 year old will have 1 Splash Orp, 2 Barred Rocks (after she sells 2of the roos) and 7 New Hampshire Reds!!!!! Is there room for her at the addicts table?

PLEASE don't make me count my chickens!

Laney
who may be checking craigs list for another coop.....

Tim, I got my Dels from Cynthia, who got hers from a breeder who I think got hers from someone with some original bloodlines. So they are out there!!! My roos are starting to do their thing, but I am not sure they have figured out they have to make contact, but when they do, and I know I have fertilized eggs, I will be willing to send you some. Mine are pretty good looking- I will post updated pictures later this week. As Kathy said, most of us on this thread have non-hatchery stock!

Laney- your daughter needs serious help - just like the rest of us!!

At least NHR are supposed to be good layers, right?

I am sorry about your little roo- sounds like what happened to Superchick- they were playing leapchicken and he moved the wrong way and someone landed on him, breaking his neck. I guess you can at least be thankful it was one you were going to cull.....????

And speaking of culls. . . . .I have one of mine in the crockpot this morning.....I'll tell you all tonight if I was actually able to eat him, or if DH dined alone . . . . actually the carcass looks VERY good as far as the thighs and "drumstick" size goes- maybe a little lean on the breast meat, but we will see.

Crazylady- I pm'd you!

Morning all....just got up (oooopppps). AC is out in the main part of the house so we slept downstairs in the finished basement...AC WAS working down there (Praise Glory!!) Main house was 84F last night at 9pm....uuuuggghh

At any rate, on my first cup o' coffee.

Beth/Kathy - using your idea of demin/blue jeans to name my little splash rock roo....whatcha think about "Patch"....since he really won't be blue?

My Dellie bunch was out all day yesterday....most look dirty, dirty from playing in my flower beds, but they were a happy bunch. Sugar and Sassy continue to lay an egg for me every day. L'il Bit and Sasha are like the wind...lay sometimes, sometimes go several days before they lay again. Very inconsistent layers, those two girls. Hoping Harley and Dot start soon too.

Hope everyone has a great "allergy free" day. Pollen count here today is over 5700!!! My eyes feel like they have rocks in them....we need some rain to wash this stuff away.

Anyway....have a Great day!

Scott

It was blazing hot yesterday for the mountains of GA in April, about 90 degrees. Tomorrow, the high will be about 30 degrees lower with rain. Maybe I'll continue my quilt tomorrow-it's been too hot to have it on my lap!

I sure hope Ladyhawk can get a minute to breathe and check in. Her Hughes Net was supposed to be turned on yesterday. Miss her on here!

Tim, Jesse McDaniel still breeds Delawares. I think shelleyb1969 got some eggs from him. Not sure what he charges, but mine have some of that line mixed in. Maybe you should contact Michelle and see if she has his contact information.

The heritage Dels are still there, you just have to look carefully for them. My hens are from Serious Bill (yes I was able to confirm this), and my roo is from ShelleyB. She only lives a few minutes from me.

Gonzo is gorgeous and sweet, but does have a double point on his comb. I've been lucky to have extremely nice roos here. I never think twice about my boys. I have 2 Del roos, 1 Ameraucana roo, two BLRW roos, and 8 Java roos. All of them are very good tempered. The younger Del roo is a little overzealous with the ladies, but I never have to worry about him with my children or myself. In fact he is more likely to hide behind me, than challenge me.

Such good little boys.

PS Tacey, how's that hatch going?

Thought I should add that I do have 2 hens from Ideal with barring not columbian markings. They are much nicer than other hatchery stock Dels I have seen, but can be easily removed from the group if anyone would like hatching eggs. I would be willing to send another dozen for cost of shipping as long as birds are kept long enough to evaluate.

Scott- I think Patches is a great name for a splash. Although I am really, really hurt that you did not like Dash Riprock -

Oh, I think Patch is a great name!

My Del pullets are like that, too, Scott! One day I get 5 eggs, then none, then 2 .... very inconsistant so far. I have 6 pullets, and the most I got was 5 in one day.

I DO have silkie eggs...

It's hard not to be obsessed with these cuties... and it is a shame that we have to unravel all the cross breeding that's been done willy-nilly. But you start with the best you can get, and work from there... after a few generations, it's YOUR line, and not hatchery stock anymore. I'm working on my Orpingtons right now, but next year the Dellies will be my main focus and I might just hit you up.

Well, this obsessed lady is in need of some shut-eye... after I move the baby Dellies that just hatched to the brooder. LOL!

Well I expect no matter what I may delete it won't be Dels and the offer still stands.
I couldn't sleep last night my youngest is getting married today and it's his and hers birthday. Stress big time.
