So then when decideing whether any of my birds have "type" I should look to the "shape" section on the page of the breed I'm looking to judge?

Rancher....I think that is "basically" it, but I would also include WEIGHT and also General Disqualifications

Thanks everyone. Just trying to get a handle on this so I know how to proceed. There is alot involved it seems not the least is the NPIP inspection. I'm not really interested in showing but it seems not to many folks realize that the Delaware is such a nice breed. Even if they get disqualified at least people will get to see them.

Most people think there are only RIR's, "white"leghorns and BR's. Most have no idea there is anything but red, white and striped birds.

I agree with you; alot of people are just not at all familiar with the Delaware breed. I can't even tell you how many people have come to my place and were just shocked at their friendliness. Of course, most all of these people have never even had chickens before. I have got quite a few people started with them.

I have been outside puttering around (and sweating!). I could not believe what I was seeing. My #1 roo, Jacob, is just absolutely the greatest! He would call some of the girls .... to the dirt bath under the boat, then he would leave. Then, he would go call some more girls .... to the dirt bath under the tree, and then leave. Next, he called a few more girls .... to the dirt bath against the shed, and then left. All the time, he was walking around and looking and appears to me to be guarding them. He just amazes me! I love this guy!

She was in with a Rooster but Hasnt started to lay eggs yet. Her feet dont seem to bother her and I'm glad of that. Today she will be able to go and run in the grass for a while.
I am actually thinking about sewing some Chicken diapers for her so she can come in the house.

She is Such a Sweet heart!! We were actually going there going to get a White Orpington and the lady said she was indeed a White.Orp., but when we got there she was like I'm sorry but she is actually a Delaware, I forgot I sold all the Whites.
I kinda thought for a minute because the agreement between my BF and I was that This would be our last Chicken for a While and we wanted an Orpington because of my grandfather.
but after having her in my arms and seeing how sweet she was I had to take her, I knew deep down that she was coming with us anyways. lol
The lady said she was part Orpington and Delaware but She is Pure Delaware! No signs of Orpington in her.
But after a minute of me trying to figure out what to do she said we could have her for free, and then showed us the 8 week old Buff Orpingtons, so we got a little buff Orpington also.

I'm So Glad we got Ruthie she really is a sweet heart. She will be housed with our EE hen, and the Orpington Baby. She likes talking to the Silkies beside her. lol

We are OVERRUN with Chickens and LOVING every minute of it!!​

Oh, I just thought the picture looked like she had a bald head (no feathers there). I can't see any evidence of a comb either, so maybe it is just the angle of the picture. Her poor feet look awful. I wonder if it would help if you cut her nails a bit. I dunno, just a thought.

Beth, how are all your Delawares doing? I got 5 out of 6 eggs from my girls yesterday. Today they are all over the place .... under the boat, under the grape vines, in the dry creek bed (covered in shade), etc. I notice they have really split up today, instead of hanging together. Believe it or not, I am hoping for some rain. Even sprinkles would be welcomed. Not so much as a breeze today, and blazing hot. How do people (and animals) survive in the desert? ***insert sweating smiley here***

Anyone have more pictures? I am hoping Cyn posts some tonight, somewhere!

I am sure those boys of hers are all loved up by now. I wonder how they are takin' it all.

Its actually Funny because I just filed her nails down with my Dremal tool. It seemed to help a little.
I think she may have to get used to her nails being shorter. I filed them down quite a bit without going too short.
She does have a tiny comb. I will see if I can get a better picture later today when it cools off. We live in Mesa, AZ.

Kathy, Lizzie is hiding under the coop in a nice dirt hole and the others are divided up between the attached area under the maple tree and their regular run. It has cooled off to about 77 here so we are fine. It rained all around me, but not more than a little sprinkle here, so everyone is in a better mood. I collected 6 eggs, with Jeanette still in a nest box, so maybe 7 out of 8 today. Unless that is what Lizzie is doing under the coop. She likes to lay in the cat carrier, but didn't have access to it yesterday, and laid in the yard directly across from it. She also didn't have access to it for most of today, since I would prefer she lay in the nest boxes, but she is independent. All due to being a spoiled porch pullet for so long, I guess.

I sure hope Cynthia posts some pics, too.

Paaz- if she is getting around OK and it doesn't seem to cause her pain, then she has adjusted, and should be OK. I have one with a curled toe from an injury and it doesn't slow her down at all.
