Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

Laney,
Wish I could help you with who to breed, but .... I dunno, why not try both of them, and see what you get?

I love seeing all the pictures! AND, of course, you all know what tonight is! It's Monday, and when I get home from work I will have the weekly photo shoot! YAY! (Hmmm, maybe I will spare you, and not post toooo many!)

Speaking of pictures ... Laney, I would love to see a picture of that brave daughter of yours .... (holding a Dellie, of course! LOL)

Well, I still haven't taken pictures yet of my little Delaware chicks from Speckled Hen, but they are so wonderful. I know those of you out there who have siblings to mine know what I am talking about.

They are honestly the friendliest chicks I have ever had or hatched out. They let me reach in and don't scamper away. I just pick one up, set it in my hand and love on it. It just sits there and lets me! Then I put it down and move on to another.
When I stick my head in there and talk to them they just look up at me, cock their head to one side and give me that quiet, thoughtful gaze. Ahhh I love them!

THANK YOU CYNTHIA!!!!

Well actually no! Mine still have that sweet loving look where as yours are great big preteens!! I would love to be able to just climb into the brooder with mine. They are adorable.
But the poop holds me back!
Another thing I noticed is that not one of these babies has had any issues with pasty butt. Usually one or two chicks need attention for a few days but not these little troopers.
I went in last night to say goodnight and do the check before bed and they were all conked out asleep. That is the first time they all slept at the same time that I have seen. I thought one was suffocating because I couldn't see its head and its legs were all cockamamey. So I moved it a bit and out pops the head and it looked like "what? why did you do that, I was asleep!"
Kathy, can you tell who your boys are and who your girls are yet? They are probably just about old enough to tell right. Gee, this is just like kids...always waiting for the next step. Guess we need to just enjoy the moments huh?
I am going to try and get pics today. I have the grandson today and might just find a moment in there.

Good morning Cynthia,

Oh yes I do see! Thank you so much for them. Poor little chicks are going to have a complex because I go in there so much. I think I am going to let them all hop around the kitchen for awhile today. That should just make my day.

What are good treats for them? I am going to chop up some mealworms today and see if they like it. I know egg yolks are one. They weren't interested in the plain yogurt in their starter mix. How soupy should it be? I made it pretty thick and tried dipping a few beaks in it. They were hilarious trying to wipe it off their beaks like it was some nasty stuff I made them take.
Aww I can hear them peeping a little in the other room, they are calling me (at least I pretend so)

I am going to get some pics today so I can make more Delaware junkies!

Well, mine are all related to yours, Rustyswoman, and they will be about 3 weeks old tomorrow/Thursday- I still get the sweet look, tempered with a very knowing, almost amused look - Kathyinmo- mine look a LOT like yours- and yes, isn't it wonderful how friendly they are? My hand goes in, and someone or two will hop on it, try to run up my arm, several more stand around and wait for me to rub their little chests - only one or two could care less, but they don't run away, either. (Unlike UltraDramaQueenSuede who thinks I am Evil)

Keep the pics coming- I will try more this weekend myself-

I HAVE A MAJOR QUESTION!!!!!!!! Delawaregirl, you identified your little roo by the comb and ???? I have several with a little more comb than others, but also that are showing barring on the backs of their necks and more tail than the others - another way to tell baby roos? I am probably over anxious, but it's so much fun. I am betting with my husband on one of them - Buckshot- the one that is most likely to jump on my hand, run up my arm and fly to the top of the waterer. He has the barring on the back of his neck and more tail feathers, also showing barring and a little comb. . . . .

Hi Joltabey,

Another way I am seeing the Roos from the girls is their coloring. The girls seem to have a brownish spotting almost like on my Faverolles just very very light. The Roos have the typical coloring. The girls are a bit lighter too.

Ok here are pics of the family! Hi Grandma!

Hi again Joltabey,

Here is a picture of a few of the older Dels. The one on the bottom left is a girl and you can see how the pattern is different on her. Then there is the obvious roo in the center. Hope it helps

Well. generally the comb is bigger and redder plus the markings start to show differently. When I get home today, I will post a pic of a pullet I have and a cockerel too.
