Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

Kathy...It'll work

There's no reason for it to not work. I just dunno why I hadn't thought of it myself

HorizonSon...never even heard of duckweed

but I WILL look into that! There is an entire thread over on sufficient Self explaining how sprouted feed is better for them and more nutrient rich in the winter months when nothing is growing well. I plan on sprouting corn for them in buckets, amongst other things. It makes sense, now why did I not think of it before hm?

Serrin...the bakery idea is a GREAT one! I may be able to get them some feed on the cheap that way! I mostly bake our breads and such, so it actually hasn't even occured to me to have a source of commercial breads for the birds. Thanks for that! And YESSSSSS please continue to pray for us!!

Inkheart...unfortunately, around my area, folks frown upon that apparently. Everywhere I have asked they have said no
sad.png
I guess they just toss it all out, or already have folks they give it to maybe

Snowhunter...will keep ya posted on the sprouting as soon as I get it going

I'm excited!!!

DH DID get his unemployment started BTW, was afraid he would not be eligible, but he IS

So, some pressure relieved for now. I will still need to get a job, but we can hold out for a month or so on what we have, so I have time to look, and hopefully obtain a way to make a bit of income. This is gonna be hard! I'm always up for a challenge though

Cindi, depending on your weather, try kale and spinache, too. Cold weather veggies that can be grown in cold frames in some areas. And I like the idea of asking for old veggies, too!

I am SO glad you can keep your babies

I think I am going to do kale in the cold frame, and lentils, corn, and maybe alfalfa in buckets or trays..still reading up on how to do the fermentation of some of the grains too, as that also sounds like a good idea. It'll be a lot of work, but will definately stretch the commercial rations as far as possible. I may try to find wheat too, as it can be trimmed, and regrow, and trimmed again several times before it is considered spent. WHOLE new way of farming

Seriously...check out Sufficient self, the sister site. Look at the thread BarredBuff started...it is OVERFLOWING with EXCELLENT info!!! A GOLDMINE! I'll take pics and such to post along the way

It's gonna be so cool/weird to do this. I hope hope hope it works the way I am thinking it will. Feed is getting SO high!

Cindy,
If its like it is in NC they are prohibited from giving away old veg. They say the health dept. will not let them. sigh I could sure use some too. This fall we planted a long bed of mustard and we have it covered now. It is still doing well even though it is 17 one morning. I pull some everyday or two for my flock of 20. They inhale anything green. They esp like turnip greens. The 7 top variety does not grow big roots but can be cut often also. If you can find them they are great even for us to eat. Prayers are sent your way.

Cindi glad to hear DH got unemployment , Now remember to apply for everything after all that's why we pay taxes to help folks out. Just do the best you can that's all anyone can expect.
Hope you get to keep your chickens, that's real important on my end of things. Hate to see you have to start all over.

Take care everyone

crazyhen, they just don't wanna share around here

We are doing what we can! I put in several applications today, and am trying to think of a few things I can make and sell as Christmas gifts this holiday season. I'm already started on that.

We got a GREAT deal on a wood stove today, and it will save us a BUNDLE(likely around $700-800) on heating bill this winter...penny saved is a penny earned. $80! Can you believe that?!?! Eighty bucks and we were looking at ones for $499 before the layoff situation!! Prayer answered!! We will get it installed this week and already working on cutting some seasoned wood we have out back.

I am so tired of not being more self sufficient, so we are hitting the ground running on this. We WILL come out on the other end of this crappy economy better off, I refuse to accept anything less
