I think there are a many who care about quality and don't like being misled. There are MANY MANY MANY people who want a nice bird in the backyard that lays a nice egg. There is TOTALLY NOTHING wrong with that. MANY of us start at that point and then EVOLVE into the more selective buyer who wants a more SOP birds. SOME EVOLVE even more to become breeders of SOP birds.

NOT everyone is called to show birds, but clearly there are enough people showing birds to have large chickens shows in every US state. I think it is a fallacy to believe that there is not that many people interested in breeding to professional standards.

Delawares are a work in progress, from what I have seen. I do believe Sandhills has the best intentions, as far as preservation efforts go. Frankly, I have yet to see a perfect Delaware. There are lots of culls hatching. I have seen some descent stock, and I think people just need to look around and get the best they can. Thing is .... even 2 show quality birds are still gonna produce some culls. There is no way that I know of, to hatch 100% keepers. All breeders (all breeds) have culls.

Sorry for being so snarky it's been a bad day. If I didn't have chickens I would have stayed in bed.

Of course everyone is right I just don't think it's right to mislead folks as the hatcheries do. It seems to me they could get a better supply of breeders than they have. I just don't think they care.

You know if they hired breeders who were doing all the selective breeding necessary for good SOP birds, then they would probably have to charge at least twice what they do. They do provide a service for some . . . just not those of us looking for realllllly good birds.

On the other side of that coin, I have had some really well known breeders try to sell birds that weren't even close to SOP and charge an arm and leg for them.

So as with everything else in a FREE market society - - -Buyer Be Aware and I don't think I would have it any other way !

I don't expect SOP birds such as blue ribbon but they sure shouldn't look like the one I posted either. Signs of other breeds in the mix shouldn't be so obvious. But I am learning and perhaps expect to much. Can a bird fit the Standard and not be perfect?

Because they are coming back from the brink of extinction, all Dels are a work in progress. I have nothing bad to say about Glenn Drowns of Sandhill--some of his breeds are better than others, is the general consensus. His Dels may be better in some areas, but I don't think I've seen that many of them myself. Everyone is looking for new blood and it just isn't easy to find. Whatever you do, there will be many culls if you are reaching for the SOP goal, to be sure.
