Im thinking of getting delawares....maybe one day even breeding them in Az. How big do the roosters grow? How nice are they?

Depending on your lines, breeder or hatchery, the roosters can get to be 9 lbs or so. Temperament does vary. Ive had aggressive ones, but my current one is a big sweetheart who likes chest scratches. That is one trait you cull for, as well as conformation. Overall, they are some of the friendliest birds I've ever owned.

Adam, congratulations on your eggs! Del banties! I think that's great someone is breeding them- and they should definitely be included in the SWDW.

Tanichka- mine are only 10 weeks old, but they are very friendly, and I can pick all the roos up, most of them are starting to like it. Get breeder stock if you can.

We worked on the run yesterday and it will be finished this weekend- I can't wait to see what the kids do on grass! They had their first grapes yesterday- it took a minute or two, but they gobbled them down. I cut them in 8ths, sprinkled grit and broccoli buds on top of them and a teeny bit of chopped up macaroni.

Can anyone here coax JamesA into posting pics of his Del babies that he got just before I got mine?I would love to see his.

Good morning all!
Iam sorry about your hatch LANEY, but congrats on the hatched chicky!!
Here in Ca, we have been swimming in rain water for the last couple days. Everything is so soggy wet. I feel like I should be building an ark soon!

So, How is your weather today. I know there has to be sun somewhere.

Dang it Laney...I am sorry. I know when Cyn shipped my eggs, it took them an extra day to get here, then my broody would not take them (the wench only wanted eggs she had stolen in the coop) and I had to wait the weekend for my bator to arrive on Monday by xpress mail. When hatching came about, if I had not helped Cannonball and Athena, I would not have them here. It is so hard to know when to act and when not too. I sure hope this last del baby makes it.


TaceyPerkins and Walkswithdog ... I hear ya. Here in So. Oregon we have had nothing but rain for a week and no end in sight through at least Sunday. My yard is like a swamp to trudge through to the coops. *sigh* Thank goodness for rubber boots.

I'll still take the rain over ice and snow. . . and that awful cold spell!
I am "hardening" my babies off, getting them ready for the coop. I've moved the lights up so that they pretty much experience actual daytime temps, and then lower them back to keep the night temps above freezing. They seem absolutely fine with it. I heard this horrible noise coming out of the brooder yesterday - I had the door into the house open so I could hear them- thought it was another murder attempt, but they all were sitting around peacefully, so I am wondering if it was someone's attempt at crowing?

Beth, Isaac and several of his brothers began crowing at 9 weeks old, so it's entirely possible.

Cher, the only thing saving me is that I steadfastly refuse to even LOOK at brooders.
