Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

Hi guys. I've have been enjoying this thread for sometime now and now it's time to jump in. I have been raising chickens for 7-8 years or so and got several Delawares a few years ago, but being hatchery birds, they didn't amount to much. Being from the eastern shore of MD/DEL I have a keen interest in raising the Delawares. How does a person get started? No more hatchery birds for me. I have ask around here and have put ads on craigslist and on our Pet Chickens Of Virginia website, but it appears that no one around here has any. I have seen several folks on ebay selling eggs, but none of them look very good and I know the hatch rate of shipped eggs isn't good. But that may be something I have to put up with to get started. Any help or ideas would be great. Thanks, Jim

Dell lovers, to address the hot topic of diversifying bloodlines...

Has anybody considered "creating" new lines of Delawares? I mean, going back to the original cross, a Barred Rock X New Hampshire Red. Essentially this is how the breed started, right? So why not find some SQ BR and some SQ NH and breed them to each other. 21 days later, out comes brand spankin' new Delaware blood.

I have a feeling it probably isn't that simple, but it might be worth a shot to be able to continue the heritage breed. Imagine if all of us did this, or just a few, there would be so many Delawares to pass around we wouldn't know what to do!

A few of us have Delawares nearing point of lay. I believe we will all be attempting to spread the Delaware lines we have then! Check in the BST area .... Claudia has eggs for sale. She has great birds! Also check with rustyswoman (Germaine), as I believe she may have some.

I think Germaine (rustyswoman) has some from his line. You could check with her to see.

Germaine has a few different Delaware lines (about 56, I think

No way, as in there is no way in heaven that I would attempt that project!

L0L, I can only imagine all of the headaches you would potentially run into along the way...

But wouldn't it be worth it in the long run?

Doesn't Cyn have some pretty good Barred Rocks...

Why recreate something that already exists? Just improve on what we have.

Well, it would be adding to the good that we already have, ya know? Not replacing, supplementing.

As far as BR, I might just take you up on that proposition, but not for a few months. My 'bator is so full it's overflowing right now.
